SS. lanceolata pro- duced but two freely on impoverished fields. S. strictus has a contracted spike of flowers and delights in heavier soils. And S. lucidulum, which has thick, smooth leaves, and grows on the borders of salt marshes. The whole family of Asters is in bloom now, their ccol blue flowers sparkling like sapphires on autumn’s great shield of gold. Aster salicifolium has the largest and most showy blossoms. It delights in shady bor- ders. The crowded thicket on the border of a stream is its favorite resort as if its clustering blue flowers delighted to reflect the sparkle of the sky-lit wave. A, puniceus grows on alder bottoms, and is sometimes six feet high, with large purple flowers. A. muitiflurus, of. our western plains, is also a large plant, but the flowers are white and less beautiful. Six or seven other species of Asters now spanyle our development of this country than the facts connected with the recent expedition to the foot of the Rocky Mountains of the Cana- a month to reach Calgary. Who shall say we are not progressing ? When the road is finished north of Lake Superior the distance between Halifax and Calgary will be, of course, very greatly re- duced from that travelled by the above party—some 350 miles we believe—and a corresponding reduction will be made in the time required to trayel from ore place to the other. By the all rail Canadian route the distance between the Atlantic and the Eastern base ot the Ricky Moun- tains will be about 3070 miles, which an ordinary express train should travel inside of five days. So that wondrous as has been the achievements of the past few years in reducing the time between Halifax and Calgary from seven weeks to seven days, a couple of years more will probably see a still further reduction, By the end of 1885 it will require no more time and STATIONS. | EXPRESS, | MIXED, | MIXED. | lottetown, next door to Stevenson’s Tin Shop, EVERY (BEST QUALITY.)
