‘The frumious Bandersnatch, Friday, January 16', 1981, page 12 Audition for‘The Hostage’ . A The University Theatre Society has announced its long—awaited auditions for this year's play, Brendan Behan's 'Ihe Hostage. The auditions are being held in the Faculty Immge Main Building, fran 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20. Those unable to attend these times should see Ian MacDonald, Director of Extension, who is the play's producer. According to Mr. Mac— Donald, there are many act- ing parts available, both big and small. There are also parts for people who can sing or dance "after a fashion." No previous experiences is necessary, but auditioners will be asked to read frcm the play , I _ .who once did time in a Brit— and to read something of their own choosing if poss- ible. ' Mr. MacDonald describes The Hostage as "a rollick- ing sort of comedy by a ' wild Irish rogue." "This story is about a young English soldier being held as a hostage by the I.R-.A. in exchange for an I.R.A. man scheduled to be hanged. There is anger behind it. But what Behan really says is 'a plague on both your) houses - love is what matters . ' " Despite the sombre setting The Hostage has been des- cribed as "magnificent entertainment.“ It is full of ballads, satirical songs, dancing and general Irish wit, romance, and shen— . anigans. The play has won several awards since its first performance in 1958. Brendan Behan, the author ish prison, maintained that he had "a total irreverence for anything connected with society except anything which makes the roads safer, the beer stranger, . . . the Haven-1&1. -\Vinc dipped. c . .‘Jfitfifitd‘dh J; .s..~..-. lfood cheaper, and'oldImen the play has a serious mess-_ and waren warmer in Winter and happier in Sinner.’ _ U.P.E.I.'s production 13 directed by Ronald Irving who has had considerable experience working with both amateur and profess- . i He_ has direct- ed or advised several pro- ional actors I ductions at the l including last year's A_§ youiLikeiIIt.
