MORRIS, A RAILROAD’S ROMANCE. Plow the Lake Shore Was Buiit Up From sn Unpromising Beginning. The consolidation of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad with the New York Central will close the separate existence of one of the three most interesting roads in the country. The first railroads in England and the United States were opened in the same 1830. It # creditable to the cour- age and enterprise of the west that the earliest links of the Lake Shore were projected in 1835, and that one of them, the Erie and Kalamazoo, was begun in that year and finished and operated in 1837. The rails used were long joists of wood, with iron straps spiked to them. Once in awhile one of these straps would work loose at one end and thrust itself up through the floor of the car in an in- quiring sort of way. These phenomena were known as ‘‘snake heads;’’ also by other endearing names. Of course when a spake head came through the floor the train stopped, as the motive power was slight. There isin the Lake Shore office in Cleveland a picture of the first train ever run over the Erie and Kalamazoo. It had a tiny locomotive without a cab, a combined baggage, freight and fuel car as big asa coal flat of today, and one passenger coach seating apparently about 20 people. This car had Gothic windows and doors like a church and a pitched rocf of considerable height, sloping to front and back. Stockholders in those days had the right to use the tracks with their wag- ons, getting wheels that would fit the just as wagons now run upon street railway tracks. The wagons weren't in the way, for trains were slow and infrequent. Once Fred Avery mada 33 miles in three hours on the Erie and Kalamazoo. Although this was in 1849, when the system was not exactly new, Superintendent Bradbury called Avery into his office and told him that if he were ever again gtilty of such reckless- ness he would be discharged. Of course a train crew was not very large in the early days inthe west. The engineer collected the fares and the fire- man bandled the baggage and freight— all trains carrying both—loaded wood for the engineer and dipped water for the boiler from some convenient ditch with a pail. The Michigan Southern was the far- thest west of the little neighborhood lines forming the Lake Shore. lor years it had its western term '::.:; at New Buf- falo, on Lake Michigan, ©) one having much faith in Chicago’ .. *pt its resi- dents.
