Sports Flyers must become ferocious once again. The Philadelphia Flyers, at one time the Brad Street Bullies put fear into the heart of any team that had the misfortune of playing the Flyers in their home build- ing, the Spectrum. In the glorious 70’s the Flyers won consecutive Stanely Cups. The Brad Street Bullies were made up of players like Captain Bobby Clarke, ‘‘Moose’’ Dupont, Bill Barber, Rick Macleish, Bob ‘‘Hound dog’’ Kelly, the Watson brothers, Dave ‘‘The Hammer’’ Schultz, and Bernie Parent. The Flyers were more than a team they were a hockey family. These players knew how to wina game. For twenty-two consecutive years the Flyers were good enough to qualify for the playoffs. Bobby Clarke was the heart and soul of the Flyers. Clarke was only an average shooter and average skater. Because off Clarke’s Diabetes people thought he wouldn’t be tough enough to play in the NHL. Clarke proved them wrong. Clarke was awarded the Heart trophy as league’s most valuable player three times. Clarke was the hardest working player in the NHL. In 1984 Clarke retired and became general manger of the flyers. Clarke excelled at this position and built a team that went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in 1985 and ’87. Yet the Flyers lost both times to Gretzky and company. (nothing to be ashamed about) Then 1990 came and the Flyers were riddled by inju- ries and they weren’t good enough to make the playoffs. For reasons I still can’t come to terms with the Flyers owners decided to fire Clarke as GM. Clarke then went to Minnesota, chose Gainey as coach and they had the North Stars in the Stanely Cup Final. Ever since Clarke’s departure, the Flyers have been in Never Never Land- Never, Never win thatis. To tell the truth the flyers of 90 & 91 Stink. I don’t like many of the players in the flyers. For the most part the Flyers is a team of Weenies. Who dol like? Rick Tocchet, Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Rod Brind’ Amour, Mark Howe, Ken Wregget, Dave Brown, Gordon Murphy, Dan Quinn, Elund, and Terry Carkner. The rest of the Flyers are inadequate. The GM Russ Farwell isa dork. Who did he choose in the draft? A Swedish player, no he wouldn’t pick a North American player. Clarke made a fine choice for the North Stars. Mike Ricci, the much touted sophmore is overrated. His problemis _ he would be better off with the Habs for he just isn’t tenacious and tough enough to wear a Flyer’s sweater Mark Recchi of the Penguins would be a great guy to: have in Philadelphia. Tocchet, Hextall, and Howe are the epitmy of what the Flyer were all about. The new. breed of Flyers under the dork, Farwell are Weenies. You couldn’t pay them to go into the corner after the - puck. They can’t winthe game ifthey are afraid. Paul Holmgren the Flyers coach of the last three yea is not responsible for these weenies Holmgren wasa | punishing player for the flyers during his career. ' Here is the ideal Flyers starting lineup (1991 Pay only) Defense Ray Bourque; Mark Howe; Centre Rick Tocchet; Left Wing Wendel Clark; Right Wing Cam | Neely; Goalie Ron Hextall. i al aieilel A eal tk UPEI X-P RESS November 14, 199] Page If
