Iintil these discus- sions have been completed it is un- likely that Greece will adopt a definite policy regarding the international situ- ation. Diplomatic representatives of Austria and Germany are disturbed hy the evidence forthconiing of the decis- ion coiitscriiiiig the n1ttion's foreign pol- icy. Nevertheless Greecifs inclination towards the cntcnte Allies is well known. 'l`lie task has been made more difficult by recent reverses to the Rus- sians which seem to have strengtlicned the position of the party which oppos- ed intervention in the war and have raised doubts in the popular mind re- garding the strength of the Allies. Some irritation has been produced moreover by what is regarded an at- tempt by thc Allies to influence Greece or unduly innki-, unwelcome territoriiil concessions to liulgarizl. This feeling is being counterhalaiiccd to some ex- tent, however, by thc indignation aroused by reported ill treatment oi Greeks in Turkey. Appreliensioii concerning the policy of Bulgaria may bc destcribetl as the key to the situiitioii. Any suggestion that Bulgaria will be streiigtliencd seems to blind the Grceks to ull other considerations. IIUDACIOUS EXIIUSE 0F THE GERNIIINS (Special to The Guardian) LIVERPOOL, Sept. 12.-The White Star Line inadc the following com- iucnt to-day to the Canadian Press in regard to the Governnient’s expla- nation of the torpedoing of the Ara- bic: “The German excuse contained in the note published to-day is just as 'audacious as the previous one. A great point is made of the supposed attempt on the partfof the Arabic to ram the submarine, but everyone Ikuows courses must be changed fre- quently iii a channel and that any 1-liiintre of such ii kind could not pos- sibly he mistnkcu by the Germans to mean an attempt to ram. There is not the slightest question that the Arabic did not try to ram for the .simple reason that the submarine was not seen by Captain Finch. Moreover the Arabic did not try to escape, the Ollly Dl'@lJai'atioi\ taken being to put the heliu over directly the torpedo 'was seen." Per baseball match today organized by Lady Drummond on behalf of the wid before our positions at Mount Maro I set fire to thc woods in the Western' PA1Rl0TIC.FUNDl ley will throw lllie first ball in thi' ` I BIG ISSUES ' ` Sir,-Really the socalled Liberal manifesto is too small for anything. Can intelligent. broad-minded men and women take it seriously? Should the Hon. Ben. get hold of the reins of power? We might expect a reversion to the times of the quill pen and if the threats in the manifesto were car- ried out we might see the Hou. Ben. as sole driver of the quill. There would undoubtedly be a general dismissal of all clerks in the various public departments and a great auction of typewrlting and other machines which tend to efficiency, and of course the funds raised in this way would help to swell the great prospec- tive surplus at the end of the first fiscal year. We might also expect a partial illustration of the parable of the talents. The Agricultural grant would be carefully wrapped in some of the Hon. Ben’s dry goods and buried, but when it came to dlg‘ging up time we fear that the discovery would be made that the grant had gone the way of the $35,000, and the' farmers of this pro- vince would find that it would take more than the perfect knowledge of the " Three R’s” which they would of course have had instilled into them in the meantime, to unravel the mys- teries surrounding the buried grant. Imagine any person or party aspir- ing to lead the province insulting fthe agricultural electorate by telling them that a knowledge of the “Three R’s ” is all sufiiclent for them. Do such fogles not remember that given the necessary and proper education some of our Island farmers’ sons have be- come great men and leaders. is it not possible for the Liberals of this province to fliid men who can think in bigger terms than this? ls it possible that the electorate will even think of allowing our fair province to be hurled back into old antiquity and ruled by a lot of back numbers and some very raw recruits. Talking of audits, would it not be interesting to study an unbiased audit of the Hon. Ben's private accounts and compare his financial condition as it is to-day with what it was when he first became Lieutenant-Governor? The Hon. gentleman as Lieutenant- Governor received a salary amouiitliig to nearly a third of the annual Federal Agricultural grant and what did he do compared with what has been done by some of those much abused men who have come from Ontario, where men and women are modern and broad- minded enough to receive our Island bo_vs without a question as to where they came from and give them the place of honour if they are personally worthy. \Vliere are the yoiixig men coming from in the future. to take the places of those who are to be sent about their business if a study of the “Three R's" is to he the limit ot' the education- al propaganda in this province? We are coiifldent that our electorate can think bigger than this and must bc angry that they should be so dragged in the dust before the eyes of the whole Dominion. Such small thinkers would disgrace the smallest village council in exist- ence. I am Sir, etc. ISLANDEII. Pusuc cmvflurncr Sir:-lt. has been suggested, and I think all citizens would concur, that the Post Office authorities place a stamp vending machine onthe prem- ises so that thc public might be able to nrociire stanips when the stamp clerlt's ofliee is closed.
