The Queen of the Village. BY HAT BERTE. See, there she trips, adown the street, A little basket oa her arm, ‘** Who is it?” why ‘tis Marguerite, The village maiden from the farm. ‘ A village maiden, nothing mor: Stay, stranger, ere you li ghtly talk She is the an zel of the poor, And God is with her in her walk, rhis is her kingdom, here she reigns, 4 Queen elect by one consent, No rival to usurp her deigns All own her sway and are i content. Not hers to mingle with the crowd )’ claimants to a beauty’s meed, | Bat, oh, she is with grace endowed, And oh, her face is fair indeed, She vies not with your courtly dames, Whom pride and pomp and fashion please Her unassumin g coodn 1ess shames The arts aa wiles of such as these. ' he sick, infirm, and azed long lo hear her fingers at the latch ; tier very footfall 13 a song they strain their eager ears to catch. ney love to hear her r vad aloud Some passage from the sacred tome, yreacher ever hushed a crowd N oO ft I ittage home. So still as in that c Vhere her sweet voice tel! story of a land afar, want and sufferi saa s oer again tt Vhere g and pain Are not, and joys immortal are nd when her voice ascends on high, ‘They know God hears the simple prayer, (nd feel a hclier presence nigh, And tirmer faith when she is there. \nd oh, the dainties that she brings, The pies and cakes and egys new laid, \nd cosy garments—useful things Her own light hands have plann’d and rade made, vot one that dwelis within the, place, 1 But loves this pride of maidenhood, lier modesty, her winscme grace, Her simple ways of doing good. -_>_o- « — Cheerfulness If people generally knew what an advantage to them it was to be cheer ful, there would be fewer sour faces in ibe world and infinitely less ill-temper. A man never gains anything by exhibit ing his annoyance by his face, much less | by bursting into passion. As it is neither | manly nor wise te yield like a child pettishly to every cross, sO it alike foolish and absurd to allow feelings of anger to deprive us of self-control. There never was a man in any contro- versy who lost histemper who did not come near losing his case in con sequence. If ever a person plays the game of his enemies it is when he is in passion. Acquaintances shun men of proverbially ill-temper, friends diop away from them; even wives and children gradually learn to fear more than to love. Thousandsof men owe their want of success in life to neglect- ing the control of their temper. ‘Good temper is gold, is beyond price. Bad temper is a curse to the possessor and society. is + <> - <a He Wanted Straw. Man with business air drives up to the gate and calls the farmer. “How are ye, sir?
