And we ask what is that‘ for which vitadcis are built and maintained? ls _it. not‘ psrsktllliliizlx-I ity? We "wish to pro cc um beings. p There are many citadels m any ‘social order worth the name. The imost. important is. I think W0 Will all agree, the home. But there are others outside the home and which guard its very approach, e 110019 is our most important citadel, be- cause life begins there and the children are undrer its SIIDCIgVISIOI} and protection or a num er o ears. y We may readily see that what we call Law is one of these out.- pcsts. So we have 0h; Srotecititm of the police, for pro c on s a. ‘prime necessity. Sometimes we find that officers who hazelto d: with’ the administration o aw o no get the respect which they should command. Juvenile crime is on the increase. and tiéi; robiiiing (‘of stores and banks st e po m, c s 81in are events all too common. The home is the world in miniature. and it ls the place where discipline should begin and be maintained. The sad and disquieting thing is that children grow and have far .too much of their own way. The lreeulr is that later in life the law iof the land has to deal with them without gloves. I Another outpost is the cilurch. ‘Wordsworth in a little poem ad- dressed to "Lady Fleming" - a poem called “Devotional incite- ments" he says that the function ‘of the (‘hllltiil is "to unsensualize the mind." While the home comes first in importance in the matter of human training, it. could not get on very will ivitllout the help of the church. One aids the other in this important matter. There are other outposts and the school is one. In it the course of study should not be left to Utility alone. The old idea and that which Newman advocates in "his Idea of a University," is that the arts course in a college is at the hssis of all. So here the disciplines. classics. and mathematics have a place. The professional schools -- ‘those for medicine. law and for technicians come later. The end ‘seen should not be just mercenary. , The real citadel is the home — ‘more important than church or Ischool. The ideal home should to is certain extent be both, —- a Escliool and a church, Parenthood may be too lax. and "ostrich culture.” ‘to use Horace Busheiks expressive phrase, may be all to common, and inevitably with bad results. There is no such thing as bring- ing up children by proxy. 0i course good homes in which to live are e. necessity and right ideas should be taught. there. If the home falls. the state will follow as surely as night. follows day. Luxury will not do. We hear a good deal sboug our high standard of living. What are its elements? Luxury cannot take the place of the inculcation of the virtues and the minor mortslities. Biography shows that. from very humble homes have come great, men — men who have climbed to dizzy heights. shove/lag that. the old text. "it. is good for a man to‘ bear the yoke in his youth" is correct, and is borne out by the record of after years. Whsl; is the conversation at the table? Is it any more than common gossip?
