Jan. 12 - (GP)- Trad-ing was active on the two Montreal livestock markets today and light receipts since the pas‘. two weeks kept prices steady. Re- ceipts: 670 cattle, 787 calves, 801 hogs, 799 sheep. Steers ranged from 1150-16 ac- cording to quality. Good quality steers were 15-16 with medium kinds selling between 13.50-14.50. Heifers ranged from 8-15. Good butcher cows made 11-12 with a few selling in mixed lots as high as 12.50, including steers and heifers; medium kinds 10-11 and common butchers 8.50-9.75. Cari- iier and cutter cows were 650-8 with an odd cow selling as low as 6. Bulls ranged from 8-12 accord-s inc to quality. Veal calves ‘were in very good demand at prices ranging from 15-23. Good quality veals were 22-23 with medium kinds selling from 20-21. Drinkers or pail fed calves were from 13-15. Grassers, 10-12 with the bulk of the sales between 11-1160. There were no early sales made on hogs. Buyers were bidding 28.50 for Grade A and sellers were ask- ing 29. The bulk of the lambs were of common to just medium quality and sold in mixed lots at prices ranging from 16-1650. Most oi the lambs offered were bucks and common quality lambs. Mines displayed easier tendencies in light dealings. Closing averages indicated banks up .08 at 27.76; utilities up .7 at a new high 0074.3; industrial; unchanged at 125.1; combined up .2 at a new lilgli of 108.1; papers off .93 at a new low of 862.65, golds off .85 at a new low of 73.2- Approxlmate industrial sales were 45.700 shares and mining sales w- taiied 116.400 shares. 1n utilities, Winnipeg Electric gained 1 7-8 to touch a new high of 24 1-4 on a turnover of 3.610 shares. Ottawa Power advanced 1-2 at l8 and Ottawa Electric was ahead one point at 27. Shawinigan. on a turnover of 1.380 shares. and Brazilian, with 1.170 shares traded, were up 1-8 each.
