MaaArt.law .-pm I have never forgotten the sur- priss I experienced as a young follow one Tuesday afternoon some 34 years ago in seeing the first automobile race past our farm home. (The advent of the automobile to the Garden of the Gulf is within the memory of all middle-aged vlslanders) yet con- sider how far we have gone in the matter of transportation in the short space of time since autos be- gan running on our roads. To most farmers the auto and truck have been a. blessing in that they provide rapid transportation between farm and market. Before the advent of the motor car. when a machine went haywire or when there was a hurried call for an errand which demanded immed- late carrying out, it often took hours when the busy farmer could least be spared to go to the vil- lage, town or city. These changing times are some- thing to ponder. But let us turn once again to pioneer days in this province, or to go back n m. tla further on the highway of time, to the day they left Europe. They knew full well that they were seelngtheir homelands for the last time. Never again would the family circle be complete. IFOI many it was farewell for- ever. Why? Because of transporta- tion difficulties, lack of money to . take an ocean voyage, and but not least the the mails. Unless your letter was carried to its destination by some trusted person, the chances were heavily against its ever being re- ceived. last . . . , It is difficult for this genera- tion to realize or appreciate the benefits that have come with these changing times. It took weeks to sail around the Island in early times. Airplanes can do it in a. matter of minutes, and the auto- mobile can cover the same dis- tance in a single day. Crossing the Northumberland strait was a 3' hazardous Journey in winter by ice boat. The same voyage is now done in less than one hour on one of the world's most up-to-date ice breaking ferries. . One hundred years ago the end of the settlement was just about the end of the world for many Island folk. What lay beyond the primeval forests was unknown, strange. almost to be avoided. farm youth of today have no such feelings. They know what. lies be- yond. Boundry lines have disap- peared and with their going went ignorance and prejudice, as well as those sectional differences that came from lack of knowledge or understanding of the other fel- low's problems and View-points? one of the big events in the life of a pioneer boy or girl was that of visiting a relative who lived any 20 miles away. The journey was usually began in the early morn- ing of a fine summer day. "Nellie," the old farm plug, was as tired as the children were, at the end of the trip. Today the same distance can be covered by the family auto in less than half an hour. Today the farm woman can en- joy an evening's ride away from the drudgery of pots and pans and meals, which is as it should be, for there has been little pleas- ure in past years in the lives of most farm women.
