APRIL T. 1899. ~`_____.____ __ __.. _._ _--_ami ‘ ACTINOMYCOSIS. ~ , Tm: GU_iizn1.lN’s recent interview I with Dr. Pethiclr, V. S. in regard to , tuberculosis and “lump jaw” among _ Island cattle has attracted consider- xable interest, which ought not to be "permitted to abate until we have a system of meat inspection established. Dr. Pethick has furnished to the Farmer a fuller statement that that given in this journal in regard to actinomycosis, its origin and how it is spread. He tells that the germ of .fthe disease is the ray fungus, which is sometimes found oi grass and grain and is imparted to cattle by eating. “The irritation the fung produce gives rise to the induration -of the tongue, long known as wooden tongue, or to the enlargement of the jaws or other tissues, both internal and external, tumors form which have long been looked upon as cancerous and described as osteo sarcoma. The disease no doubt spreads when ani- f mals sufibring from it are allowed to ‘run at large or to graze on the same ~ pasture fields with healthy cattle or to feed out of the same troughs, as ' the spores escaping in the saliva may be taken into the mouth of the ani mals by their eating the grass or drinking the water. Thespores pene- trate the tissues and produce irrita- tion which results in tumors of the above description.” In England the disease most com- monly affects the tongue, in Denmark the soft parts of the head, in Germany #the throat and in Canada the jaw. tumors and abcesses resulting are .-all found to be the same in their for-igin from the presence of the same :fungus In the form prevalent in the .filsland and throughout Canada the -.disease “starts in the marrow of then drone and by a. slow extension gradu- lzally undermines the entire thickness »of the bone, the growth continues out- wards and after working its way I through muscle and skin -finally breaks through and appears extern- I =-'ally as a fungus growth. Thesel sgrowths may at the same time work ‘their way inwards and appear in the In fact Dr. Stewart, of the! 'meat inspection service of Kansas _ City, says that he never met with a well marked case of actinomycosis in ` which there was not a fistula or pipe connecting the tumor with the mouth, hrough which pipe was dischargingl an ill smelling fluid.” Dr. Pethick, while desirous not to` cause unnecessary alarm, tells that it has been discovered that a similar ll disease, arising from the same germ is found among mankind. The loca- tion of the disease in man corres- ponds fairly well with that in cattle. Dr. Pethick proceeds ; , "The majority of cases which have been reported in different parts of the w0;1d,anri they are now quite numerous. I indicate disease cf the face. '1`he skin N la very slow process it may extend down- of the face may become akected and by wards upon the neck and even into the , cavity of the chest. In many cases thel teeth have been found in a slale oi more | mr ll ss a lvm cell decay :ind iii 1c~v ra-eS‘ disease ot' the lungs was observes." Here, then we have a frightful disease, prevalent among cattle, com- municable under certain conditions ,from one animal to another. And we ` he ve a corresponding disease, repulsive and incurable in men, And we have undisputed evidence of the fact that cattle ailiicted with this terrible mal- ady are sold for food year after year to unsuspecting customers. Surely we should have the means of detect- ing and preventing the sale of such diseased meat and it is the duty of our law-makers to provide it. The disease ought to be promptly stamped out, _by the slaughter of every infected yanimal. _llednesday.19thol April lleit ‘Queen Street, directly opposite the - =io-}°i__-l--Y-" i What the construction of the Nica- ragua canal would mean in the way of shortening distance by lvater be- tween Atlantic and Pacific ports may be briefly stated.
