BY ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON, Once more the Heavenly Power makes all things new, And domes the red blowd hills With loving blue ; The blackbirds have their wills, The throsties, too, Opens door in Heaven. From skies of glass A Jacob's laddar falls On greening grass; And o’er the mountain walls. Young angels pass. Before them Heets the shower, and burst he buds, And shine the level lands, And flash the floods, The stars are from their hands Flang through the woods The woods with living airs how softly fan- ned! Light airs from where the deep, All down the sand, Is breathing in his sleep, Heard by the land, O follow, leaping blood, the seasons lure; O heart, look down and up, Serene, secure, Warm as the crocus cup, Like snowdcrops pure, Paat, future, giim pee and fade through some slight spell, A gleam from yonder vale, Some far blue fell ; And sympathies how frail In sound and smell. Tillat thy chuckled note, thou twinkled bird The fairy fancie= range, And ‘lightly stir-ed, Ring little bells of change From word to word. For now the Heavenly Power mekes ali things new, And thaws the coll, and fills The fiower with Jew. The black birds have their wiils, The poets too ° i i Food and Brain Work. Says the London Jsancet: An organism which is doing brain work as well aa muscular work requires higher and better food than un organism in which the brain is com- paratively idle and only the lower cen- tres and the muscles do much work. Undoubtedly the effect of brain work is to strengthen the brain and to render it jess likely to become abnormal in its structzre or disorderly in its activity than if it were idle. Such education asthe brain receives in education, pre- perly so calied—that is,* development of the faculties —atimalates nutri- tion, aod in so doing — stimulates the need for food. Excessive activity with anxiety is aot good atal!, and ought to have no place in the educa~ tional process. Worry is fatal to good work, and to worry the growing brain of a child with work is to maim its or- ganization, doing irreparable because structural mischiet, the eifects of which must be lifelony. “Tension” in work is not a proof of streagth, but of weak- ness, <A well-developed and healthy grown brain, works without teusion of aoy kind. The knit brow, strained eye. and fixed attention of the scholar are not tokens of power, but of effort. The true athlete does pot sirain and pant when he puts forth hia strength. Phe iotellectual man with @ stroug brain does his brain work easily. Ten- siou is friction, and the momest the toil of a growing brain becomes labori- ous it should Weare, untortun- ately, so accustomed to see brain work done with effort that we have come to associate effort with work, and to regar? tension as something tolerabic, if not natural. Asamatter of fact, no man should ever knit his brow as he thinks, orin any way evince effort as he works, ‘The best brain work is done easily, with a calm spirit, an equable temper, and a jaunty mood. All else case, inthe toil of a weil-developed brainj ‘training to accomplisha task which is relatively too great for it. The Editor Knew. “T go into society a good deal,” said @ Visitor to an editor, “and I want to get the reputation of being a literary man, something like Henry James and those fellows. Now, how shall I go to work ?” “Talk Blazac to replied the editor. “Bat I never read Blazac, response, “Neither have | 2 them,’’ senteatiously ? was the society people ; so you're On perfevily safe ground. You just compare everything with Pera Goriot and you'll be invited toread a paper before a fort- night, Good-by.” The editor turned sadly to his writing, reflecting thut he had probably made another reputation without receiving apy Commission. ~<<—- Healthiest Occupations Statistics in England that the ‘est place among healthy occupations is held by ministers of religion; gard- ners and nursery men come next, then farmers and graziers, laborers in agricultural countries schoolmasters, and these are closely followed by certain trades—notably, by grocers, Coal merchants, paper manufacturers, lace und hosiery manufacturers, wheel- weights and coal migers. sho Ww twas in California.
