14 Entertainment The Panther Prints _ January 23, 1996 La Sagouine Opens Jan. 31 Theatre Prince Edward Island’s first production of 1996, La Sagouine by renowned Acadian author Antonine Maillet, will be performed in English at the Carrefour Theatre, Charlottetown, Wednesday January 31 through Sunday February 4:00 at 8:00 pm, with a 2:00 pm matinee also on Sunday. Antonine Maillet’s masterpiece has been acclaimed in Canada, the USA and Europe, in both French and English versions. Mme. Maillet has been recongized internationally with many awards, including the Governor Gener- al’s Award and France’s coveted Prix Goncourt. The play features the unfor- gettable Sagouine as she confronts the shortcomings of those who people her world. Her expose is earthy, irreverent, funny and wise. La Sagouine will star Viola Leger, the original creator of the role. Mme. Leger, one of the great names in French Canad~ar theatre, has performed the role well over one thousand times. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada, and was recently awarded New Bruns- wick’s Prix d’Excellence, among many other honours. Theatre PEI’s production of La Sagouine marks a professional reunion for Viola Leger and artistic director Ron Irving. Mr. Irving directed the premiere production of the play’s English lan- guage version in 1979 in Montreal. He later mounted productions for Toronto, Winnipeg and Boston. Writing on the success of the English version of the play, a Montreal Gazette reviewer stated: ‘“The important (and amazing) thing is that, beyond a doubt, La Sagouine can reach an anglophone audience as easily as she reached francophones. . . The character has survived the metamorphosis with her soul intact.’’ Tickets for La Sagouine are available at Tweel’s Gift Shop and the UPEI Bookstore, or at the door. Prices are $14 adults, $11 senior citizens, and $8 students. Its aim appears to be to celebrate the beauty in the objects around us, Most of the book contains pictures of perfume bottles. Some look ordinary, some incredibly beautiful, and some just neat. There is also a history of perfume and per- fume bottle bottles which is very interesting. This is a book people will always pick up off the coffee table, but I can’t really imagine paying money for it. -- Colleen Easter MAGNUM ocx gsit8” x P.E.L. Al by Steve J. fearvasnt Anwe Magnum
