_- ov eta eee a —_—— = — ———————— ee ” Tue DAILY HX AMINER. | AUGUST 10, 1880. Tur Annual Gathering of the sons of ‘Auld Scotia” is as enthusiastic to-day as it ever was, in the days that are past. of the most pleasing features in the Scotch ; character is the fidelity with which they stand by one another and cling to those sports which tested the muscles and fired the hearts of their fathers. Wirn terrible recklessness, intoxicated utferms of passenger men stand on the pli . and otherwise cars, and “ drink,” ‘‘ spar” amuse themselves, while trains are running at full speed. The railway officials should not permit such conduct. It is like tempt: ing Providence to make an example of some one. -o; eae oe - Tue Railway authoritios should learn a from the success of * excursion fares.” Every time the price of tickets is lowered thousands ride by rail. The plain inference is that if the standard of fares were lowerd the volume of traflic would greatly increase. While glad ‘o knew that this is the most prosperous year the Railway has ever experienced, we think we indicate a way to still greater prosperity when we pointto an adjustment of fares and rates mere consistent with the cireum- stances of this Prevince. oe oe + Lx the catile trade with Great Britain we are athousand miles nearer its market than Ontario. We can, therefere, forward catule and sheep at much less cost. Now, if we resolutely ‘*‘ put our shoulders to the wheel,” aud get a breed of cattle that will mature early, and as Mr. Adamson says, ‘‘earry their neats evenly and in the prime parts,’ we will ebtain the highest market rates, and be in a pesition to compete suc- cessfully with the world. Early and ener- yetic action is absolutely necessary, and lesson * there is ne deubt that the country would sustain the prompt action ef the Local Gev- ernment in the matter. Tan Mentreal Guzette—a ftrst-ciass cem- mercial paper, says: ‘‘ Althouch we have not yet arrived at the period when the fall trade is stimulated by the general move- meut of ihe crops, we have, nevertheless, abundant preof ef the coming stir in neary every leading mercantile and manufactur- ing department in our midst, and we ques- tien if ever in the commercial history of Canada, the signs of the times augured greater prosperty than these which new : vemit- presage a general brsiness boom, tances for this season are unusally good, netwithstanding that just now farmers, as a rule, are somewhat pushed fer means to previde fer the payment of help in harvest- ing t reir crops. jinethcemaliiaedieeais Ir is gratifying to knew that the Revenue exhibits continued expansion. In July, 1879, the receipts ef the Canadian Ex- echequer were ;— Prem Customs > 760,312 ‘“ = Excise - 212,364 4s other revenues .. 179,253 Tetal $1,151,929 The receipts for the month of July, 1880, were as follows :— From Customs $1,289,878 ‘* Excise ai 355,444 ‘« other revenues . 384, 307 Total —» de OU SGT The increase for this one month, therefore, has been $837,500 These figures show that tle state ef trade is impreving, beyend a doubt. ---— + Oe wom oe) - We are requested by the Inspector of Fisheries to bring to the notice of anglers that there are in the rivers censiderable numbers of young salmon, five to six inches in length, that rise readily to the fly, and which should be take carefully off the heok and returned te the water. A littls observatien will distinguish them fron. the trout. The salmon fry, to the age of ten or twelve menths, closely resemble trout, but are usually marked with transverse bars or ** finger-marks,” as they are called. They have larger eyes than trout of the same gize ; are rounder on the back; the tail is more forked and there is likewise a differ- ence in the dorsal er back fin. Every true angler should learn to distinguish the two kinds ef fish ata glance. Indeed, it would be only spertsmanlike te return to the river all fish under six or fseven inches in lenvth. Let the Fish and. Game Pretec- tive Associaticn pass a by-law to that effect, binding its members and other legitimate anzlers would speedily follow suit. a > 0; <> -o oe —___.... ‘ue wife ef Mr. Patrick McDonald, Lot 30 was accidentally killed on Saturday last. Mr. i Mc Denald and the deceased were taking in| hay, and Mrs. McDonald remained on top of a load as it passed into the barn. She was by some means jammed between the cop of the barn door frame and the load of hay, and thus received injuries which caused her death sev- era! hours after the accident eccurred. Mr. Me|onald and family have the sympathy of the community in their sad affliction. Island is in progress in the clans,” ‘ » .. field of the Hon, J. C. Pope, 5¢t. Peter's Read. The attendance, it is asserted by some, is larger than in any previous year, sionists flocked into the city. The hotels were literally packed. It is estimated that over two thousand strangers are here, wit- nessing the gathering, which, despite the threatening weather, 1s a decided success. By yesterday evenings train from Tignish, over an hundred and fifty excursionists ar- rived, while the steamboat express brought as many more. The ‘St. Lawrence ar- rived the same evening with upwards ot two hundred excursionists from Pictou, Westville, New Glasgow, Stellerton, and other places in Neva Scotia. The train frem Georgetown this morning brought about two hundred excursienists, and the train frem Summerside centained a like number. The “‘ Meather Belle” had ever three hundred and tifty passengers from Orwell and the surrounding districts, while the ‘‘ Southport” from West River, brought about two hundred, The Prize list and all particulars will appear to-morrow. _ - _- - Eastern Notes. Anoraern Leusrer Cannery.—-Mr. Haley of Souris, has Jately erected another Lob- ster cannery at Bay Fortune Harbor. This enterprise is looked upon with approval by the people of Foriune and surrounding country, as it will give employment te a large number of persons during the greater part of the year. The Order in Council, published in the last ‘* Canada Gazette, ex- tending the lobster fishing season to the 10th September, will, we believe, prove gen- erally acceptable to the lobster fishing in- terests in the Dominion. Haymakinc.—Owing to late rainy wea- ther, haymaking in this part of the country has been almost a failure thus far. The greater part of the crop is still unsaved, if tiner weather dues not seon set in, che hay, as weil as wheat crop, wi'l we fear, be seriously damaged. Pic-Nic; —Seurians had a very enjoyeble pic-nic at Abel’s Cape, Bay Fertune, on Friday last. Sovers Tea Party.—The ladies of St. Mary’s Parish are already preparing for the Grand Tea which is te take place at Souris on the 18th inst. There is no denying the fact that Souris is famed for its successful Tea Parties and the coming one, will, with- eut deubt, afferd as much pleasure and pre- fit as any former one. The Railway fare frem Charlettetown and Return is lower than ever before, being only 90 cents with correspondingly low rates, all along the line We bespeak for the Souris Tea the patronage of the public. Tue Wear Cror, in this section of the country looks well. Formerly farmers sowed too much oats and teo little wheat. For the last year ur two they have been en- deavoring to raise their own flour, and if wet weather dees not injare the wheat crep this year will be unusually good. Our far- mers are realizing that raising oats with which to purchase flour isa grand mistake. In an agricultural Prevince like ours, there is no reason why wheat eannot be raised as well as other graiys, as the crops this year are likely to abundantly prove. ; cimaciaiiaiihesen Tak Fairsarrn Famity.—In spite of a heavy rain storm, a good-sized audience met in Market Hall last night to give the vocalists welcome, ‘he first part of the entertainment comprised the gengs of 1845, interspersed with humerous songs and old ballads. ‘This eccu- pied an heur and was well received. The second part presented a contrast at ence novel and highly interesting. A musical and dra- matic sketch, written by Mr. Fairbrairn, en- titled ‘‘The Rehearsal,” gives scope fer the display of beth musical and dramatic taleat— aud in this portiea of the entertainment the Misses Fairbaira eyinced ability of ne com- mon order. Miss Bessie Fairbairn’s rendition of ‘Casta Diva,” altheugh meant for bar- lesque, was a fine performance. Her ‘ Mrs. Jones’ Musical Party” is inimitable, and little Miss Polly, iu the ‘*Kerry Dance” and ‘‘Caller Herrin’” sang and danced chacm- ingly. Mrs, B. Roberts as ‘‘ Mrs. Gen. Tit- mouse” was excellent, and in the scene with Mr. Fairbairn as Colquheun, what with the Englishman's pomp and the Scotchman’s sim- plicity, it was very funny, We bespeak a full house for the Fairbairns te-night. Dr. Leemine, Tur AusTRALIAN ORATOR. — We understand that the Rev. Dr. Leeming has consented to deliver a lecture, entitled ** Daniel O'Connell,” full particulars of which will be announced in a future issue. The re- putation already acquired by this eminent gentleman, wili surely induce a large number to hear him. Ir is said that telegraphic cerrespendence between the Governor of Newfoundland and the Secretary of the British Admiralty, estab- lishes the identity of the igure head found at sea as that of the lost training ship ‘‘ At- lanta.” SERGEANT Ewen McDovucatp, the Island Lepresentative at Wimbledon arrived home last evening. \ a Amone the arrivals by boat last evening was Johu Patterson, the Venerable bagpiper, from Halifax. He was well received by the Clans- men. ‘EV. D. B.
