PACE TEN llr Thornton W. Burgess) WHO WAS SCARED? All too often you will find. Fright is Just a state of mind. -Old Mother Nature. What Old Mother Nature says is very true. It happens very of- ten that folks are badly scared by nothing at all. They run away when there is nothing to be afraid of. It is because they do not stop to think, or to find out if there is anything to be afraid of. The danger is all in their minds. Over at the sugar house in the Green Forest there was a sudden silence. There had been a great racket there. It had sounded as if some one were tearing every- thing to pieces inside. Farmer Brown's Boy and another boy had been startled by the noise as they approached the sugar house. Farm- er Brown's Boy had yelled for whoever was in there to come out. At the same time he had picked up a stout stick. Now there was still- ness that could almost be felt. There was not a sound of any kind inside that little house. West. on the good chance of finding his partner with a sin- gleton club. opened the ace of that suit and followed up with the club three. East ruffed, but he made an absurd return. He had very carefully scrutinized the low rank of West's second club Dlay the three-spot and, convinced from this nut west, wanted a return or the lower side suit. East "obediently" led back I. diamond! This, of course, wgs in the nature of a reprieve for South, who very soon got rid of his losing spade! West, who was naturally not pleased with the outcome, asked East why he hadn't returned a spade, which not only would have given West his spade ace but also would have resulted in Out of the open door rusherl Mother Bear with the two cubs at her heels. never would have guessed that any one was inside. Nor was there any sound outside except the dis- tant cawing of Blacky the Crow The two boys stood undecided what to do. Farmer Brown's Boy shouted agaln.' "Come out of there!" he shouted. No one came out. Still there was no sound from within the lit- tle house. ”You may not be scar- ed, but I would feel a whole lot better if I knew who is in that house," said the other boy. ”Therets one way to find out," said Farmer Browns Boy. "Come on. Let's open the door." "Not me," replied the other. "Pooh! Don't be tfraidyh" replied Farmer Brown's Boy and started on. The other started on too. Somehow he was more afraid to be left behind alone than he was to go on. Now inside that sugar house were Mother Bear and her cubs. They had gotten in by way of a hole in the roof. but they couldn't get out the way they had gotten in. They were trapped! When she found this out Mother Bear had quite lost her head. She had become almost crazy with fright. Being trapped does this to folks. She had torn about like crazy. snarling and growling, as she tried to find some way out. Then she had heard Farmer Brown's Boy shout. Instantly she had stopped rushing about. She had stopped growling and snarling. It wasn't that she was less frightened. She was even more frightened, if that were possible. She stood listening. The cubs. seeing how still Mother was keeping. kept still also. Mother Bear's ears are very good ears. Presently she knew that one and perhaps two of the dreaded two-legged folk whom all Green Forest folk. big and little, distrust and fear. were just out- side the door. she heard Farmer Brown's Boy and the other boy talking in low tones and knew they were very near the door. which she herself could not break open or break down. The door was locked. Farmer Brown's Boy tool: a key from N3 pocket. "You better not open that door," said the other boy. Hr: backed away hurriedly. "Pooh! There is nothing and no one in the Green Forest to hurt us," said Farmer Brown's Boy. and reached out to open the loci: on the door. He hesitated a mo- ment, listening. There was no sound from inside. He put the key in the lock and turned it. He took the padlock off and lifted the latch. The door flew open with a sud- denness that sent Farmer Brown's a. second club ruff. and a two- trick defeat of the contract. East defended himself by saying that he couldn't tell that the ciuhl three was Wests highest card inf the suit, aside from the ace. and that he (East) naturally had read it as a suit-preference slgnall There. in a nutshell. is one rca-. son why this signal should be used more sparingly and cauti- ously by the average player! East! should have realized that West's club three had no special signin- cance. There was no reasonl whatsoever to assume that west? nu.3u was void of diamonds. l WAKE UP YOUR LIVER BILE - Without Cslorall-And You'll Jump Out sl bed In the Morning Ruin' to Go Thopliyargahould pour out about 2 pint: of bile guano into your dugutivn tract ovary dav. lfthinhilo in not tioyingfrocly, your food may not d: not.
