We have not received further particulars regarding the melancholy affair than that she has been, for some time, despondent, and a week ago at tempted to murder two of her children, A. Lunensure despatch to the Chronicle says: A melancholy case of suicide has oc- curred here. Deputy Sheriff Caldwell, being about to proceed to LaHave Islands in his yacht, between four and five o'clock this morning, discovered the body of Mary Bailey, eldest daughter of John Bailey, in the harbor, notfar from the shore. Life had been ex- tinct several hours. No cause can be as- signed for the rash act. The young lady was universally esteemed, and deep sympathy is felt for the afflicted family. At Belleville, Ont., on Saturday tast, two boys named Soles and Donoghue, aged respec- tively about 16 and 14 years, went to the woods near Canifton, in search of gooseberries, taking with them a gun. Soles loaded the gen with powder, but the ramrod being short ecould not withdraw it. He said to his companion that, unless he got some berries, he would shoot him, when the gun, which was pointed towards Donoghue, who stood about fifteen feet off, went off. The rod struck Donoghue in the thigh, about inidway between the knee and the hip, and, hitting the bone, the wood splintered, making two additional wounds. One of the pieces was taken out after much difficulty, but others of the splinters remain deeply imbedded in the flesh. It is quite uncertain how the case may result, as there is much danger from the after effects of the injuries. Tuer steamer (‘arrol/ arrived from Boston at noon to-day, with a cargo of merchandise and the following passengers: Mr Jacobs, Mr Everhart, Mrs Dodge, Mr Patrick Rogers, MrBF Rome, Mr B Woodside, Miss Towns- end, Miss Campbell, Mrs Daly, Miss Lizzie Daly, Mrs Mexon, Miss Sarah R Morrison, Miss E Ball, Mies Alice Campbell. Wittram Werrr and Daniel McLeod, two young street Zulus, were arraigned at the bar of the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court this forenoon, on charge of assaulting Francis Drain. The assault was proved, and Ww hite, who appeared to be the leader in the affray, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, with hard labor, and McLeod to one month. Patrick Cavanagh took an active part in the same fray. He will accon pany them for twenty days. Michael Purceil, it appears, met Daniel Hogan on Water Street, yesterday evening. Dan:el was returning to his home, havingon his person a bottle of excellent brandy. Purcell attacked him from the rear, and, after dealing him a few heavy blows, captured the bottle and made off. Daniel pre- ferred the charge as leniently as possible, under the vexing c‘reumstauces, and the Magistrate let Michael off wth ‘‘one dollar or four § days;” but threatened to sepd him up for six months on the next offence. SHORTLY AFTER arrest, yesterday evening, Daniel McLeod and Patrick Cavanagh were searched. Officer Cameron found on McLeod three keys, which McLeod said he found under astone in Mr. Connolly’s lot. They were shown to Mr. Bowers, who, to-day, in Court, identified two of themas the keys of apart- ments in his safe, and one as the key of a tin cash box which ke kept in his safe. Mr. Bowers besides identifying the keys,*stated that some time between Saturday night and Monday morning, the New Era office was entered ; that the safe lad been broken, and six dollars in cash and a number of notes-of-hand and other valuable papers taken. He had no c.ue to the robbers, and said that he missed the keys, which were shown to him by the officers, three weeks ago. Officer Warren, found on Cavanagh, ferruel cane. Mr. Joseph Brecken appeared in Court and identified the ferruel as one which had been taken off a walking cane which mysteriously left his hall a short time ago.
