MARITIME PROVINCE BAPTIST CON- VENTION, This body, the largest ecclesiastical or- ganization of the lower provinces, will hold its Sist aunual meeting this year at Berwick commencing August 22nd. The eabject of this convention is tocare for and ad- vance educational and missionary opera- tions of the Baptist denomination. It appoints the managing boards for home missions, foreign missions, ministerial education, and every three years appoints six members of the board of governors of Acadia college. The convention is com- posed of delegates and life members as itoilows: First—each of the eight associa- tions of the lower provinces may send two delegates. Second-—ech of the 404 churches in the bounds of the convertion is entitled to representation in proportion Lo its contributions to benevolent objects,’ said delegates to be limited to five. Third —Every ordained Baptist minister con- nected with one of the above churches is a member in his own right; of these there are 229. Fourith—the faculty of Acadia college, being members of any of the above churches, are embers in their own right. Vifth—Any member of one of the above churches contributing at one time to the objects of the convention $109, is a life member. Thas the membership is vari- able but might easily be over 1,000 if there was anything like a genera! attendanceand the entertaining church is taxed to its ut= most to accomolate such an influx of guests. In the 404 churches of this con- vention there were reported last year 47,- 180 members, with 2,729 additions during the year. The number of Baptist houses of worship is, in Nova Scotia, 305, valued at $599,757 and having 66,000 sittings ; in New Brunswick, 194 houses of worship, worth $365,030 and seating 46,130 people ; In P. E. Island, 17 houses, wor.h $46,100 and having 6,175 sittings. Thus the de- nomination owns in these lower provinces 506 churches or houses of worship, valued at $1, 610,887 and with a seating capacity of 118,305. The large field covered, the nurmber of interests coming up for review, the importance of these subjects, with the limited time at the disposal of the body, all tend to crowd the sessions with business of ex!reme urgency, making these annual meetings anything but a recreation tothore who are working on boards or committees. liailadiealiasduedeuteudeasliaanna EXTERMINATING THE RED MAN, Starvation, Whiskey and Ruffianly Whites Destroying the Indians. Qvenec, Aug. 15.—Pere Goyce, an Oblat Father, who has just returned from a visit to the missions of his order on the Labrador coast, reports that the In- dians there are in a state of starvation. He complains that they are dying of hun- ger, while the rivers ot the coast are swarming with fish, especially salmon, but that as these waters are mostly in the hands of clubs or wealthy men, they are unable to avail themselves of these sources of natural ford supply. He also com- plains that while the Indians and settlers along the coast are forbidden to utilize the eggs of seabirds, which were formerly a source of fcol snd profit to them, the Newfoundlanders make des- cents upon the coast in defiance of the Canadian law, and in the absence of ade- quate police protection, and carry them off by wholesale, thus also largely reducing the supply of _ feathered game. Lastly +e complains of the fata] work done along the coast ~ by the whiskey traders and declares that the, missionaries are powerless to carry on their good work in the face of brute force used by these ruffians and the demoralization are graduates of McGill University and the >resbyterian College.
