Prices firmed ln late trade with comme -.l.l demand in the form of shippers appearing in cats and barley. Local selling was influenced by the large estimate of the 1950 wheat crop released yesterday by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. but this was offset somewhat by threats of frost in grain-growlnx regions. Egg And Pouliry Marketing Report The production of cilgs durinz the month: of January in AD?” inclusive was somewhat tighter than for the same period last year. reports Mr. F. M. Nash. district innspcctor, poultry pro- ducts. Production increased con- siderably durimz May and June and offset the loss in volume dur- ing the earlier months of the year. Total production to date is about equal to that of 1949; how- ever. produrtion has now started to decline and with a light pul- let crop it is not likely produc- tion will bc as great for the re- mainder of the year as in 1949. The majority of eggs in Can- ada are produced during the months January in June Seventy per cent of the eggs are produc- ed during the first six months of the year nnd this creates n sur- plus of eggs during the spring to be followed by (I. deficit per- iod in the autumn. It might be said the spring surplus amounts to 12473: or the volume shipped to the United Kingdom. Since 9111:! were not shipped to Great Bri- tain. these eggs had to be stored In Canada. to be sold here during the deficit period or from this date onward, Taking eggs off the market and storing same during the surplus period has the effect of holding pg-ices steady during this period and of course when placed on the market in the (all has the effect of not allowing prices to so too high during the deficit period. The storing of eggs this spring increased the price of eggs to the producer by some ten,or twelve cents a (loan. The placing of theoe oil pro- cessed eggs on the market at the present time is having the effect of reducing prices by ten cents per dozen under the high of last year. It looks as if egg prices have about reached their high for ifhls year. Canadian poultrymen in 10.50 reduced their chick purchases by 1796 as compared to the previous year. At present levels of pur- chasing power and consumer de- round, the population of laying birds as of September 1st should just about take care of Canadian domestic requirements in 1950-1. The egg market at the present time is strong at present prices and all supplies are finding a ready market throughout thn Maritimes. A review of paying prices will show that some deal- ers are apparently making a much better job of marketing eggs than others. y The price being pa'id to pro- ducers for ungrsded eggs by oper- ators of grading stations varies considerably running all the way from .45 to .50 cents a dozen for Grade A Large. .41-148 for Grade A Medium. and .25-.30 cents for Grade B.
