The Beef Cattle Industry. Che acknowledged scarcity of well i well-formed Deet cattle in the present time doub less in large measure for the im ved prices being paid by dealers rs for the class ot cattle su t for the export trade his fact a icccunts In a great measure for active demand for pure-bred bulls the beef breeds, and the higher prices } which are being obtained tor such inimals. It is gratifying to know that | the farmers of Canada are waking up . to a realization of the situation and ot the needs of the times, and are in in- creasing numbers acting on their con vc tons and putting themselves in line Witi tae requirements of our markets, as they apply not to beef cattle, but also to dairy products, pork and poul- try. There is, however, yet much room for improvement and expansion in all these lines, and we need have no fear of overstocking the market, if we are only careful to produce the best quality. The live stock market reports turinish interesting reading for farmers and feeders, and the startling differ ences between the prices of well-bred cattle for beef and those paid for ill- bred animals should lead all who read improve It is not all best prices going. un— common to note a difference of 75 cents to $1 per roo lbs.between the prices paid for a bunch of ordinary ill- bred butchers’ cattle averaging 1,000 Iqs., and that of a well-bred and well- finished iot of export cattle averaging 1,350 Ibs., and a little figuring will serve to show that, rating the former at say $4.25 and the latter at $5 _per- cwt., the difference in the value is just $25 per head; $250 on ten head of cattle, or $500 on a carload of twenty head. And this may fairly be reckon- ed as the profit on one class over the other, as the scrub cattle have cost nearly if not quite as much to raise and fatten as have the well-bred ones, to say nothing of the pleasure and satis- faction which comes to all concerned in handling the better class. It is our entire confidence in the soundness of of the doctrine that well-bred cattle are infinitely the most profitable to raise and to feed that prompts us to so per— sistently preach the gospel of good blood to our farmer readers through- out our vast constituency, feeling assured, as we do, that the general adoption and practice of these precepts would in a very short time add many millions of dollars to the value of our farm stock, and to the wealth of ovr farmers individually.—Farmer’a Advo- cate. We ls und Richardson Co., Montreal, P.Q. a o meeting of the New Brunswick Farmers’ and lairymen’s Association : Responding to the president’s invita- tion, Mr. T. J. Dillon spoke briefly on the New Brunswick cheese trade. New Brunswick wants more cheese and butter, but the quality must be right. To secure this there must be a better class of cows to commence with. In Prince Edward Island the farmers nearly all havea money interest in their local factory and consequently they are careful to furnish only good milk in order to increase their profits. Prince Edward. Island cheese har _late- ly been commanding a higher price than the New Brunswick make, In the first place, the factories ever there are better built, many of them having sub-earth ducts, permitting a more complete control of temperature in the curing rooms. in the early history of the Island cheese business, Professor Robertson brought down trom Ontario a number of-first class, experienced makers whose services had been very valuable. There is not sufficient uni- formity either in quality or size of the New Brunswick cheese. Island cheese are made 30 or 70 pounds in weight in 14% inch hoops. Ques.—Is there any danger of glut— ting the English market. Ans.—Yes, but we in Canada are splendidly situated to take advantage of the variations in markets. At present the prospects are decidedly good fora profitable trade in cheese during the coming season. The old cheese is now pretty well cleared out and local trade is good all over Eng- land. (Question.—What is the price of milk on the Island ? Ans.—From 60 to 66 cents. per hundred net. About one-half of the facturies pay on the Babcock system. Some add 2 to the fat readings. average Good cultivation is the most effec— tive fertilizer to be applied to the aver— age soil. Maritime Provinces farmers do notasa rule half prepare their seed bed. A very good rule is to make the seed bed as fine as you think is necessary and then go to work and do as mutch more cultivating and harrow ing on it. The broad tooth cultivator and the disc and spring tooth harrow all save labor in plowing and are very necessary implements for fitting .the ground.—Co-operative Farmer.
