Ir is sionifi ent of the state of cal ruin joto which the Opposition has politi- fallen, that their organs and shouters have come down to criticising the grant made by Parliament to indemnify the werchauts of this Island, who, for many long years, suffered loss because the Govervment of the United States did not fulfil their to refund cer tain fish duties. There can be uo im- portant qitestions or matters for which the Government are open to attack, or such journals as the Chronicle of Haiitax, and the Patrict of Charlottetown, would pot fill their long columns with elaborate editorial articals on a topic so small! The first quesiion to be asked, with respect to this matter, is, however, en tirely ov srlooked by the organs: **Shold the merchauts aud other persous who paid the duties uv ider the agreement be deprived of their movey ?” The reply everyone will be ready to make to that question is ‘‘certainly vot.” But tbe Goverpvment of the Uuited States have peremptorily refused to pay it. Why? Not for any fault of the merchaats. But, as they allege, because the Canadiau Government refused to become a party heavy agreemeat to arrangemeut. This being the cas e merchants, of course, applies to the ¢ ‘avadian Goverument ; avd the Catitudian Goverument said, iu etfect, “You have 1.0 legal claim upou us; bu! we will not see our own people suffer loss in this matter; will pay their tlaim ; bet ciiizens cf the United States seek paymeut from their ows Governmen!, who should, in strict jus- tice, puy the whole amount claimed. That is the position of the case. The Goverument of the United States is too high aad mighty to do justice tu the pense of "auch a li ttle place as P. EK. From this incident our readers may learn a useful jesson. We sometimes hear people complain that the Isiaud does vot ebtain from the Dominion Gov- ernmeut suflicient censideration, and wish that we belonged to the Unired Siates. The facts of the case under re- view show that iu the eyes of the United States’ Goverument the Island and its people are of no account at all, except in so far as they are a source of profit to Uncle Sam; avd that the Cavadiau Goverument, though somewhat siow iu the movement, are willing to do us more than justice,—at least, when a Liberal- Conservative admivisiration is in power. _--- _———_— + Biditorial Notes. —We are, almost daily, adding to oar stock of kuowledge of the miueral re- sources of Canada. The latest addition is that tio has been discovered iv the lower Selkirk Rauge iu British Culum- bia, by a party of miners prospeciiug tor gold. ‘The mise, it is reported is a sur- face one, avd contains abuudance of ore. —The total value of imports into Manitoba ia April of this year was $738,- 648, egainst $1,762 420 in the corres- pouding mooth in 1883, a decrevse of $1.4 23.772. But of this large reduction $711.000 vecurred in foreign goods aud ouly $312 000 iu Canadian goods. Thus in April last year Mauitoba imported 6884.442 of foreign acd $877,973 of Canadian goods, or about the same amount of éacl the value ot Cansdiau goods , While this year in April brought iu was $965 484 aud of foreign goods only $175,164, or more than three times as much of the former. ‘These figures, says the Moutreal Gazette, establish clearly — evough that the trade of - the Northwest is coming more end more within the man- agement of Causdiag manufacturers ‘TEL : ‘ the National Policy, the effect being to | retain money within the country avd afford a better labor market for our |people. Referriug to the decline ip the} agcregate ot imports, the Free Press i states that it “‘augurs well forthe finan- the country next mi autumn as compared with the same period of last year. The bills coming due iv the fall of this year will be much cial condition of . | lighter than those of 1883, while the } couuiry hus every prospect ot being | better able to meet them.
