The German Imperial Army is to be increased to 480,000 infantry, and 60 per cent in artillery. A well-beaten egg is a great addition to a dried-apple pie, giving lightness and a good flavor also. An increase of ten per cent, in the cotton acreage points to low prices for cotton goods for some time to come. A sumber of social young folks in Cincinnati have revived the old-time popular game of battledoor and shuttle- cock. A little borax put in the water in which scarlet napkins and red-border- ed towels are to be washed, will prevent them from fading. Pots of mignonette are now consider- ed chic for the bendoir. A broad band of orange or pale blue ribbon and bow ornament the pot. One reason why atame alligator at & ceriain acquarium is let alone, is be- cause of a siga reading: “Idiots will please stir him up.” A dainty little fashion is introduced of having a card-case made to match the calling costume, and any lady can easily make one to match any dreas she desires. The weather conundrums of Ireland. My first is the beginning of winter, my second ushers in autumn, my third is the end of summer ; my whole is a ter- rible thing. The California Chinaman hit it plumb-centre, when he said :—“Your churches spend millions of dollars to teach us the Gospel, and then your Christians use us like dogs if we seek homes ameag you. It is rather early to start the open rebellion question, but here’s “the first brick.” “Open rebellion is more than probable, in the Green Isle, now that the Tories have come into power, with all their eld animosities and overbear- ing bitterness !” Our strawberry growers may be glad to know that, among all the new varie- ties of strawberries, the “May King,” grown by Mr. Thomas G, Zane,of Crew’s Landing, New Jersey, and sold last year by Mr. Charles H. Stewart, Water and Callowhill Streets, Phil., is a big straw- berry which retains the fine wild flavor of the little ones, says the Record. On various occasions when friends are together of an evening, provide a pencil and a slip of paper to each, then agree on a word, for instance, take the word “orange” and see how many other words you can make with the letters in it, Those who may never have tried this “interlude to masic” have little idea how pleasurable as well as instruc- tive the effort is. Henry Ward Beecher gets along rapidly. He now denies that God is the direet author of the Bible, and says that Slavery and Mormonism are both taught by the Bible and that the Mormons “believe in it like thunder.’’* Beecher’s dignified rhetoric is as power- ful as his logic. Beecher evolves “like thunder.” making a loud noise and then dying away in the distance. The new Connecticut law against “flash” literature, which has just gone into effect, imposes a fine of $50 or less, and imprisonment for three months or less, or both, at the discretion of the Court, upon every person who shall sell, lend, give or offer, any book, maga- zine, pumphlet,or paper devoted wholly cr principally to the publication of criminal news, or pictures and stories of deeds or blood-shed, lust or crime. The convention of American railway master mecoanics met at Willard’s Hall, Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The vice-president, Mr. J. Davis Barnett, of Port Hope, Ont., presided. The object of the convention is to discuss all matters relating to the question of railway mechanics, with the view of extending the improvements and still further developing the rail- way “art.” Mr. H. A. Whitney, of the I. C. R., Moncton, is among the dele- gates present. > -—<e Special Notices. One of the family suggested the use of AYER’S CHERRY PECTORAL, a bottle ef which was always képt in,the house. This was tried in small and*frequent doses, and to our delight in less than half an hour the little patient was breathing easily. The doc- tor said that the CHERRY PrcroRap had saved my darling’s life. Can you wonder at our gratitude? Sincerely yours, Mis.
