CHAPTER VIII-—-(continvep.) ’ ‘* Si, senor,” was the reply, in a tone of angry astovishmeunt. “J «m an officer of the American army ”—I spoke loud, and ia Spauish, of course, for the benefit of the peens and ‘vaqueros. ‘‘I am sent to offer you a coutract to supply the army with beeves. ‘I have here an order from the general- in-chief —” ‘*T have no beeves for sale,” interrupt- ed Don Ramon iu a lond indignant voice ; * IT shall have nothing to do withthe Am- erican army.” | Then, sir,” retorted I; ‘¢ I must take your beeves without your concent. You will be paid for them, but take them I must; my orders require that I should do so. Moreover, your vaqueros must ac- ‘company us, and drive them all to the American camp.” | As I said this, I signalled to Holingsworth, who rede in with his following; and then the whole ‘troops, filing throagh the — back gateway, began to collect the frightened Vanqueros, and set them about their work, | +I protest against this robbery!” ‘shouted Don Ramon. ‘It is infamous— contrary to the laws of civilized warfare. ‘L shall appeal to my governmeat—to yours—I shall have redress.” “You shall have payment, Don Ramon,” said I, apparently tryiug to pacify him. ‘“ Payment, carrambo !—payment from robbers, filibusteros.” ‘‘ Come, come, old gentleman !” cried W heatley, who was only half behiud the sceues, and who spoke rather in earnest, ‘keep a good tongue in your head or ‘you may lose something of more value to you than your cattle. Remember whom yor are talking to.” : ** Tejanos! ladroncs!” hissed Don Ramon, with an earnest application of; the latter phrase that would certainly have brought Wheatley’s revolver from his belt, had I not, at the moment, whis- pered a word in the lieutenant’s ear. ‘¢ Hang the old rascal!” muttered he, : in reply tome; “I thought he was ia earvest. Look here, old fellow!” he continued, addressing himself to Don Ramon, ‘‘ don’t you be scared about the dollars. Uncle Sam’s a liberal trader and a good paymaster. I wish your beef was mine, and I had Ais promise to pay for it. So take things a little easier, if you please ; and don’t be so free of your ‘filibusteros’ and ‘ladrones;’ freeborn Texans aint used to such talk.” Don Ramon suddenly cut short the colloquy by angrily closing the curtains, and hiding himself from our sight. During the whole scene I had great difficulty in controlling my countenance. 1 could perceive thai the Mexican labored under a similar difficulty. There was a laughing devil in the corner of his keen eye that required restraint ; and I thought once or twice either he or I should lose our equanimity. J certainly should have done so, but that my heart and eyes were most of the time in othér quarters. As for the Don, he was playing an import- ant part; and a suspicion of his hypo- crisy, on the minds of some of the leathern-clad greasers who listened to the dialogue, might have afterwards brought him to trouble. Most of them were his own domestics and retainers, but not all. There were free rancheros among them—some who belonged to the pueblita itself—some, perchance, whe had figured in pronunciamentos—who voted at elections, and called themselves citizens. The Don, therefore, had good reasons for assuming a character ; and well did the old gentleman sustain it. As he drew the curtain, his half- whispered * Adios, capitan! heard only by myself, sounded full of sweetness and ‘promise ; and I felt rather contented as I \straightewed myself in the saddle, and issued the order for reeving his eattle. TO BE CONTINUBD. a — ED OE -O ee The theft of the body of Earl Crawford at Aberdeen has created a great sensation. It is believed it was effected in May last, be- fore the vault was closed, and that the co- vering slabs have only now been disturbed so as to bring the fact to the knowledge of the relations, and make them enter into ne- gotiations for the recovery of the body. The wgent of the estate raceived a letter in May stating that the body had been stolen, but reyarded itasa hoax. Itis suggested the thieves are from Florence, where the body was embalmed. A labourer has been arrested in connecticn with the outrage. A meeting called for the 13th instant to raise a memorial to Dean Stanley will include the Prince of Wales, Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Chief Justice and per haps Mr. Gladstone and the Duke of West- minster. It is intended to erect a monu- ment beneath Lady Augusta Stanley’s memorial window, and it is hoped, also, to be able to fill the Chapter House windows with stained glass, for which purpose sub scriptions have been invited. The lat- VOL, 10.-Nv. 15. = wy -- Le ae en ee ee MAREUHTS. OATS. The demand for oats in Great Britain, according to reeent reports, is light. The prices were slightly lower —nineteen shil- lings per quarter of 304 pounds being offered for the United Kingdom and uine- teen shillings and six pence for the Contin- ent. The price of oats in Charlottetown for small quantities is from 34 to 36 cents per bushel. POTATOES, The export of potatoes from this Proy- ince for the season is well nigh over. The export for November was large, and in value amounted to over $330,000. About two thirds of the quantity shipped went to the United States, where there is at present a fair demand for potoes xf goud quality. However the potatoes exported from P. E. Island are not the sort desired by Brother Jonathan, and we would advise our farmers in future to grow the potato which is most suitable for our best market, i. e., the United States. In New York on the 3rd inst., P. E. Island ‘* Mercer’s” were quoted at $1.75 to $2.25 bulk, per barrel. In Charlottetown they sell at 35 to 40 cents per bushel. FLOUR. The Montreal Gazette of the 5th inst., reyarding the flour market, saye:—- The dulness of the market was conspicuous on the 3rd, the only trading on ‘Change being the sale of a lot of uninspected extra at $6, the recent alteration in the iaspection of flour being of a more rigid character, brands which formerly passed for superior having been cut down to extra. Other brands have also come under the cutting dewn process of the new standard of in- spection. It is admitted by dealers that the old standard did not sufficiently dis- tinguish between the different grades of flour, Choice oatmeal is quoted at $5.25. The hog products in Montreal on the 3rd were quiet at former quotations, West- ern mess pork sold there in a jobbing way at $20 to $20.25 for old and at $20 75 to $21 for new; and lard changed hands at 14} to 144 cents for Canada brands, and at 15 cents for Fairbanks in pails. Hams were in limited eupply, but the few lots of city cured offered were amply sntticient to meet current needs, and prices are quoted at 13to 134 cents per lb. Dressed hogs in car lots were not quite as firm, buyers being afraid to lay in supplies during the present soft weather. One or two carloads were offered on Montreal market from the West, but dealers were not inclined to bid. The quotations were $7.75 to $8, smaller quantities selling at $3 to $850 as to quality. As previously stated, packers have not thongiit of taking hold yet, prices being too high. ‘The trading in Montreal is, therefore, exclusively in butcher's stock. Esenrzer Nores.— The ‘“ Northern Light” Division at this place is still plough- ing away through the breakers and cutting its way through the green ice. Yesterday (Wednesday) we had a visit from P. G, W. Beer and the Provincial Deputy of Charlottetown, and avery pleasant time we spent. The Rev. Mr. Defoe and two other gentlemen were initiated. Three beautiful Temperance songs—-‘‘ Glorious News,” “The Old Oaken Bucket” and ‘*The Red White and Biue,’ were given during the evéning. One of the speakers, while thankful for the Scott Act, deprecat- ed the apparent ease with which many of his neighbors procured liquor in_ the City, and also at that notorious den not a hun- dred miles from St. Dunstan’s College. Attention was called to the fact that phy- sicians, who had no professional reputation to loose, were freely offering certificates, and that vendors were filling these certi- ficates in the hands of common roughs, by the pint, to be repeated daily. To prevent this it would be perhaps necessary to amend the Act. Bros. James Power and W. J. Seaman reviewed the history of the Di- vision, from its formation in 1878, and trusted that in the future, as in the past, much good may be accomplished. The Division closed with the usual ceremony. Com. James Hayden, 24 years old, a son of Mr. Thomas Hayden, of Clifton, King’s Cuunty, N. B., was, on Sunday last, drowned while ekating on the ice at Gon- dola Point. The facts of the accident are heartrending. The young man had been warned on Sunday, when he attempted to cross, that the ice was unsafe, but heedeles of all danger he again skated over a spot which to all appearance was as strong as any other, but which gave way under him and he slipped into the water. He wasa splendid swimmer, and by treading water and working with his hands under the thin ice he was able to keep afloat for some time. He cried for help, and his shouts brought Mr. J. H. Carnall and Mr. Wil- liam Merritt to his assistance. They quickly got a rope and board. He was not more than 100 feet from the shore, and oue board was passed to him and the other the rescuers put down on the ice, and Mr. Merritt attempted to reach the sinking man, but the ice gave way under him and he waa obliged to make for the shore to save him- seit. After struggling for over five min- ntea the young man sank and was not seen again. The girl who is always saying she would’t marry the best man living, is pretty sure sooner or later to wake the biggest kind of a fool of hereeli on account ef some fellow nor worth his salt, and for whom nobody else would yive ten cents.
