CAMPBELL MORGAN. AUGUST 30. A DAY OF QUESTION. LESSON. Matthew xxll. 15-22. GOLDEN TEXT. Matthew xxll. 31. "They say unto Hlm, Caesar’s. Then sald He unto them, Render there- fore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's;--and--unto God the things that are Uod's." THE NARRATIVE. The title of our lesson ls sugges- tive oi’ more than the lesson includes, and it will certainly be profitable to glance at all hat is thus suggested. Following upon our l..ord's condem- nation and denunciation of the rulers in the parabolic teaching, the Pha- risees took counsel how they might. ensare Him by I-lla talk. We have tlrst the account of three questions which were put to Him. The first. was political, and was asked hy a coalition of opposing parties.. The second was doctrinal, and was asked by the representatives of the ration- ullstlc party among the Hebrew people. The thlrd was ethical. and was asked by a Phirlsee who was a lawyer. The question of the Sadducees had to do with ressurectlon ln which they dld not believe, and ln answer He had atliirinéd the immortality of man as he declared that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were not dead. Thus He ignored the question concemlng resurrection by dealing with the pro- found not of their error, which was that of the denial of the spiritual nat- ure ot’ man. As our next lesson has to do with the final question ofthe Lord, we may omit all reference to them here. Our present attention, then, ls con- fined to the question of the coalition, and our lord hhcmscmhc mhm cmc and our Lord's answer thereto. Those who came to Him were not the lead- lug Pharisees, but their disciples, to- gether with thc lierodlnns. The Her- oilians constituted a political party that were constantly' seeking to cs- cape from the Roman yoke by secur- ing to Herod full powers of govern- ment. The Pharasecs on the other hand, being entirely opposed to the llc-llenlziiig and corrupt influence of Herod, were willing and politically desirous of submitting to Rome. The question as to the payment ot' tribute therefore was rclatcil to their dif- ference of opinion. Quite apart from Jesus these men would have given two entirely different answers. ’I`lic I-Icmdianii would have spoken against the paying of tribute; the disciples of the Fharasees in favor thereof. The subtlety. then. of their qucs- tion from their standpoint is fit once soon. li' He had declared it illegal to pny tribute to Caesar, they would at once have been able to formulate ii charge of section against Him. If on the other hand lie should dcclare it proper to pay tribute to Caesur.tlicu He would seem to deny His own Mes- sianic claim, according to their un- derstanding of tho Itlesslanlc pro- grnmme. The unutterable folly of their ques- tlon from his standpoint is seen by the way in which He lifted the ln- qulry out ol the realm of party con- flict, and set it in the light of eternal and abiding principles. The method of the coalition was that of tlattery and treachery. Ap- proaching Hlni they addressed Hlnias Master, declared that they know Him to be true, and that Ile was teachng the way of God in truth; that He dld not care for anyone because 1-le rc- gardcd not the person of mcn.
