Distance cannot scatter it raysl Ti.-no cannot dim its radiancei It reaches out to all men of every no and yet concentrates on each persnii as if felt for him alone. Thai: when accepted, never rests until the Divine Lever lifts the object of His love to the heights with Himself. Tins is the Lenten period and the preparation for Calvary is be- fore the minds of all Christian people. It is because all our hopes are built on the provision there made for our salvation that the season is sacred to Christian ll8ill'fS, But the Cross is not only ii ground of hope; it is also an impulse to action. The Cross of Jesus is the supreme expression of love of God for men, and when we hat": been bought at so great a price, ' a love which inspired tiie sacrifice commands our devotion. No one whose eyes have been opened to that love can ever live to iitiiiself or die to himself. That love is behind each person's very being, and. like the sun, it il- liiniines the way he walks and claims for him the best that God can give. In return, the grateful heart can no longer consider the ten-ice of his own interests or desires as the object of his en- dt-avors. He must live for Christ who died for him and rose again. 0 I 3 Jesus made this requirement definite and binding. In the Gospel of Hank, chapter 8 and verses 27- ll there are sayings of incompar- axruauiucu Twelve, confessed that Jesus was the Messiah. To this Jesus gave two answers. First it! this be so. it means the Cross for me. The great- est word ever spoken followed; "The so" of Man must suffer. This saying is great because of what is behind it. There is Daniels prophecy of the Son of Man oom- lng with the clouds of Heaven to whom was to be given dominion and glory and kingdom; and there also Isaiahls prophecy of the Buffering S9l'V.aIll5 of the herd who by His suffering saves the guilty. (Daniel 7:13-it: Isaiah 53). In this phrase Christ brings together these two conceptions of the Messiah in His own person and experience- the suffering the way to His glory. The saying is equally great in view of what flowed out of its fulfil- ment-tne salvation of a lost race. From this moment onward the Cross was clearly before Jesus. G O 0 Jesus added a second saying to this effect: If I am the Messiah. for my followers it means. the crucified life. As His illustration He used the Roman custom of compelling the condemned to carry his own cross to the place of execution. He said: "If 'any man would come after me. let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the Gospels will save it." Here each person's cross is the instrument of self-crucifixion. In Christie service self must no longer be the centre and object of one's interest and endeavor: Christ must be all in all. Further. this investment of self in Christ's cause is the only way to one's own self development. The man who lives for self dwarfs his own soul. Henry Ward Beecher once said: "Here is a hoary, old man; he is worth minions. He. is still wise and his advice sought by leaders in finance. But he is a miserable wr-ck notwithstanding. who is heard murmurlng through the night-"0 God! when will it be morning?" He bought all the ser- vice given him. He knew there were haipy heirs who cursed God that he lived so long. The Lord had put the desert of Sahara into his heart -- sand - sand - sand - and not a. whit less sand be- cause it was gold sand". It was to a man successful according to the world's standards that Jesus put the question: "What dou it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?" . London THE A SCENEION Christian faith perceives events in the life of Christ as being also parables of abiding realities. Once and again the risen Christ mani- fested himself to some of his dis- ciples, which induced faith's as- surance that he is alive for ever- more. The implication of the cessation of those appearances, whatever the manner of the last of them, could then only be described in terms of the space which condi- tions all human thought. The cloud in the Ascension story recalls the cloud of glory which in ancient Hebrew symbolism was the outward and visible sign of the divine presence, which it conceal- ed from mortal eyes. That "Jesus sat down on the right hand of God” is evident symbolism, for his Jewish disciples knew very well that God has neither a literal right hand nor a left. The religious affirmation was that "he came from God and went to God," in final freedom from all earthly limitations; but if that triumphant faith had been or could have been expressed other- wise than in the conceptions of the universe then prevailing it would have been at once rejected as meaningless. The fourth Gospel's "Touch me not, for I am not yet ascended" ls i possibly a gentle rebuke of a ten- dency to cling to the outward and visible, and is certainly a clear in- dication that the object of trust and love should be the ascended Lord from whom there need be no separation except such as men im- pose by separating themselves from him. In the realm of the spirit there are no divisions of space, and it is because Christ is ascended that he is present. But if any attempt be made to express the spiritual truth with formal exactness. antinomy and paradox immediately give warning that language is inade- quote, and thereby show the Wis- dom of resting content with a sym- bol which can still enshrine the mystery which once it seemed to reveal. The religion of an earlier age is often criticized as having been too much concerned with personal sal- vation and as falling to realize the implications of belief in the king- dom of God. But a man who took seriously the duty, or even the prudence, of living with a view to his personal condition hereafter was at least committed to winning by discipline a real self-control. It is becoming more evident that an age deeply concerned with present social well-being needs just as much discipline of charac- ter as did any man who sought personal salvation. Progres must involve increasing control of the spiritual over the animal in man, and this can be ef- fectively and truly achieved only if his affections are set on things above, which are not means to something else but whose value is in themselves. -.. , um tendon..- of food?
