a ee x _— ee ! Home Thoughts... , lil t j The little ones run to you, eagerly, joyously, with a request on their lips. | She is full of hope, and her plan is not an unreasonable one. Think before you-say no. Whatis a trifle to you, may be very important to your child, | and it is not right to cloud a child’s day | unless one is obliged to do so. A child of God may be sorely tossed | in a troublesome sea, but that ship will] never be shipwrecked where Christ is) the pilot, the Scripture the compass, the | promises the tacklings, hope the anchor, | faith the cable, the Holy Ghost the wind, | and holy affections the sails which are filled thus with the gales of the Spirit. One morning found little Dora busy at the ironing-table smoothing the towels andstockings. ‘‘Isn’t that hard work for the little arms?” I asked. A look like sunshine came into her face as she glanced towards her mother, who was rocking the baby. “It isn’t hard work when I do it for mamma,” she said, softly. ; Deeds speak louder than words. | How good and how pleasant a thiog it| is to do nebie things, not talk about them, not premise them, not wish them done. Prayersare good, fine speeches are good, hymns of praise are good— but surely far better in the sight of heaven are the kindly deeds of those whe remember the poer. Of all the natural forces in the world & mother’s love is perhaps the strong- est ; hence the vast extent of a mother’s influence. The Church of Christ owes to the strength of sanctified maternal affection most of its noblest workers. The French Emperor, when asked what was the greatest need of France, replied “Mothers.” So to-day let the mothers of this country be traly and heartly on the Lord’s side, and their loving example, influence, and prayers, will do more to bring the rising generation to Christ than all besides. There are times in one’s life when all the world seems to turn against us. Our motives are misunderstood, our words misconstrued, malicious smiles reveal to us the unfrieadly feelings of others. Oh! how hard it all seems and the more so that we cannot divine the cause. Especi- ally is this the case when the members of your church, or, perhaps, the loved ones of the family from whom yon might have expected love and sym- pathy, when these seem almost anxious to misunderstand you and do you harm. Don’t live a single hour of your life without doing exactly what is to be done in it, and going straight in from _begin- ning toend. Work, play, study, what- ever it is, take hold at once and finish it up squarely and cleanly; then do the next thing, without letting any moments drop between. It is wonderful to see how many hours those prompt people contrive to make in a day; itis as if they picked up the moments that the dawdlers lost. And if you find your- self where so uiany things pressing you that you hardly know how to begin, let me tell you « secret; take hold of the first one that comes to hand, and you will find the rest all fall into file, od follow often, like a compaay of weil drilled soldiers. A man wasé@nce ask- ed how he “accomplished so much in his life.” “My father told me,” was the reply, “when I hadanything to do to go and doit.’”’ Thereyis the secret. ee Household Hints. Substute for Eggs,—Doughnuats made without eggs, and with a tablespoonful of cornu starch in place of each egg is a novelty, and is thought well of by some ceoks. Buckwheat Cakes.—aA little cider if added to buckwheat batter will make the cakes brown nicely and help to form a sort of crust on the outside. If you haveno cider, pour a little hot. water over some apple pealings and let it stand for an hour. Useful Pomade.“The Union Medicale gives the formula of Lasegue & Reg- nauio’s valuable pomade as follows: Chloroform twenty parts, and vaseline sixty parts. It has been used extern- ally with great success for rheumatic and peuralgie pains, andin the vague chest pains which accompany tuber- culosis. Washing Blue Fabrics.—Articles of a delicate blue that must be washed are often ruined in the process ; this may be avoided by adding an ouace of sugar of lead to a pailfal of water, and letting the article lie in this for an hour and a half or even for two hours; let it dry them, after which it may be washed without injury. This issaid to be a perfect remedy for the trouble referred to. Cure for Frost Bites.—Now that winter is here, deem it a duty to humanity to publish a cure for frost bites. Ihave used it many times with complete suevess. The remedy is to rub the afflicted parts with pure oil of pepperment. It will also prevent the after effect of chilblains. Care should be taken to use only the pure oil, and not the essence of peppermint, as the essence will not have the desire effect. — Peter Himrod, ‘To Make Celery Crisp.—Celery that is not so crisp as it should be, may be eaten prepared Jike this: After washing the celery and removing the green leaves, cut in pieces about as you do asparagus, then put it into boiling water that is salted; whea it is tender drain it, lay it on slices of buttered toast, THE DAILY EXAMINER, TANUA water in which you cooked the celery ; add butter, pepper, and salt to your taste ; serve hot. Excellent Starch.—Starch whieh will not stick in white patches on your dark cambric «tress, is made thus: Take the very best fine starch you can get, mix in the proportion of two table— spoonfuls to as little water as will make a smooth paste, and to this add a pint of clear coffee, Jet it boil for ten mind- tes. Stir it witha sperm candle, strain it through a piece of muslin, and it 1s ready for use, and will be found very satisfactory. — Special Notices. Father Wilds’ EXPERIENCE. The Rev. Z. P. Wilds, well-known city missionary in New York, and brother of the late eminent Judge Wilds, of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, writes as follows: “73 FE. SYABS’., New York, May 16, 1882, Messrs, J.C. iver & Co., Gentlemen : Last winter I was. troubled with a most uncomfortable — itching humor affectin more especially nry limbs, which itehed go intolerabiy at night, aud burned so intense. ly, that I eoukl searecly bear any clothing over thei. lowes also a sufferer from a severe ecatarri and catarrhal cough; m appetite was poor, and iny system a good deal run down. Knowing the value of AYER'S SARSAPARILLA, by observation ef many other cases, and from personal use in former years, | began taking it for the above-named disorders. My appetite im- proved almost from the first d After a short time the fever and itching were allayed, and all signs of irritation of the skin disappeared. My catarrh and cough were also eured by the same means, and my general heaith greaily improved, until it is now excellent, I feel a hundred per cent stronger, and I attribute these results to the use ‘of the SARSAPARILLA, which I recommend with all confidence as the ose, best blood medicine ever devised. I took it in small doses three times a day, and used, in all, jess than two bottles, I place these faets at your service, hoping their publication may do good, Z. P. Witps.” Yours respectfully, The above instance is but one of the many constantly coming to our notice, which prove the perfect adaptability of AYER’s SARSA- PARILLA to the cure of all diseases arising from impure or impoverished blood, and a weahene lO igiity. Ayer’s Sarsapariiia cleanses, enriches, and strengthens the blood, stimulates the action of the stomaeh and bowels, and thereby enables the system to resist and overcome the attacks of all Scrafu- lous Diseases, Eruptions of the Skin, Rheu- matism, Catarrh, General Debdility, and all disorders resulting from poor or corrupted bivod and a lew. state of the system.
