J. Penny of Halifax, arrived at Oyster Bed Bridge a day or two ago bringing with him Mr. Roder- .lck McPherson, a returned soldier who has been undergoing treatment in Camp Hill Hospital for some time. It is worth noting here, that Mr. Penny is one of the voluntary workers for returned soldiers at this hospital. As a mark of esteem for his labor of love he carries with him a handsome gold watch, chain and locket presented to him in 1920 by the returned men. I-Ie has also recently been made an honorary member of the Legion of Honor. Mr. Penny returns to Halifax today. Thrum Cap _ Takes Its Toll I-IALIFAX, N. S. Aug. 30.-The rec- ent strandlng of the British light cruiser Dauntless on the shoals of Thrum Cap, shooting out from Mc- Nab’s Island to the mouth of Hali- fax Harbor, recalls that only a few vessels have cgne to grief on these ledges since this historic port was generally know to mariners. The most disastrous wreck was that of the war frigate Tribune. which also flew a British flag and was the first ship to go aground on Thrum Cap. Eighty lives were lost when the fri- gate drifted across to Herring Cove and piled up on the rocks. Only four of her crew were saved. The ledge where the Tribune first grounded was named after the sun- ken flghting ship, and it was this ledge that the Dauntless, most mod- ern example of the cruiser-type, ran into when she mistook the proper course in n dense fog, but unlike her ill-fated predecessor, the Daunt- less was floated and towed to dry- dock for repairs after remaining on the rocks for eight days Circus Here Murphy Bros. Circus will exhibit ing Saturday, Sept. lbth, under the auspices of the Abegweit A. A. A. General Chairman, I-Iis Worship Mayor Yeo; Finance Chairman. Stewart; Chairman Program ‘Com- mittee, E. F. Acom; Chairman (fon- test and Ticket Drive, J. li. Stems; Asst. Chairman, Charles Stewart; Publicity. Sam F. Doyle, W. A. Gaudet. Thos. Corrigan. Several sub-committees were appointed, the names of which will be, announced A contest office has been opened Philip Noonan; Secretary, Charles' 9.5 people of the Continent. The dif- ficulties in the way of regulations were no greater than required for a passport to Great Britain or in the way of questions as for entrance to the United_States. In regard to miners, he spoke of the embarras- sing position in which the depart- ment was placed. Numerous tele- grams were received from municip- alities declining to become respon- sible'for the maintenance of these people after the harvest was over. There were also protests from lab- or unions. Sir Thomas Glasgow, of Australia. then spoke of Australia, the policy and methods there being much the same as in Canada. Australia wan- ted to get all the Britishers they could but not faster than immi- grants oouid be absorbed. There was the additional problem of look- ing after the returned soldiers, which was the first duty. A British mem- ber asked two pertinent questions which he regarded as the crux of the whole question: Why have the stcamship rates on the Atlantic been doubled sinoe before the war and what is to be done with the British miners in the winter? Mr. Forke replied that the Steamship companies alone were responsible for the first, as to the second the British government had agreed to take the responsibility. An Indian representative made a fervid appeal for non-discriminat- ion against Indians who were Bri- tish subjects, in all parts of the Empire. He did not complain, but in British Columbia the East In- dians were subject to several irre- gularities of status. At 6.30 the Ot- tawa session concluded with the us- ual complimentary references to hospitality and warmth of recep- tion. The delegates left for Toron- to at eleven o'clock highly pleased with their Ottawa experience. ` (Canadian Press) OTTAWA, Aug. 30.-“You seem almost ashamed of your own fruit," said Sir Darcy Lindsay, of the Illd- fan delegation at this afternoons sitting of the empire Parliamentary Association. Sir Darcy was referr- ing to the display of fruit in the Canadian shops he had seen. "And the prices you have to pay.” ex- claimed Sir Darcy. “Talk of your proflteers. Why you pay here in your own shops in Canada as much as you pay for the same fruit in London." He remarked earlier that while the bill boards of Great Britain were covered with advertisements to “eat more fruit" Canadian apples were noi; pushed oll the streets of London.
