E. I. Phone 125 od"" yoT¢§ FORTUNA l`E CONDITIONS. The temperance people and prohibition lsts have much to be thankful for in the Legislatiue. A year ago the same House by a madorlty vote committed itself tothe principle of deriving a revenue from the committed to the principle of forbidding the sale of liquors for beverage purposes rming this pr nclple the Opposition me the Opposition have gone still if adopted, would in the opinion of many have rendered the Act more stringent and enective dealing with the liquor trallic. A numbe r f l have shown so much regard for the dominant temperance sentiment of the untry as to vote in the manner we have en. This is a condition which THE GUARDIAN ardently desired to see brought about. The law will be before the coun- try in a much fairer light and with great- ly increased chances of being enforced fo r being thus adopted, not as a mere party measure but as endorsed by both parties so far as it goes. ,Another fortunate condition is that the Premier has asserted in the strongest manner his determination to give full force and effect to the measure now cn- tacted. ll/'hen the time rolls round it will be the duty of temperance men in all parts of the Island to give their utmost assist- ance to every honest effort toward cn- forcing t-he law. \Ve do not doubt that in introducing and enacting the law the Government has materially improved its standing with the country. But the chances of an election are always more or ‘ less uncertain, and ifthe fortunes of the coming contest should bring the Cpposi- tion into power it ist most satisfactory to khow that they stand committed to make the law more stringent than it now is. _ If between this time and the next ses- sion of the Legislature an appeal should be made to the people we do not doubt that the electorate will consider pro hibi- tion is 'bile of the prominent issues before P them and will strongly allirm that rinciple. If on the other hand another session of the Legislature intervenes before a general election, the opportunity vvill be afforded to strengthen any weak places that may in the meantime be dis- covered in the law, in order that itf may be made as effective to the desired end as any merely Provincial Act can be made. ‘Nc therefore regard the outlook as a' most favorable one from almost every point of view. Tar: GUARDIAN has been for years, and from the beginning of its existence wholly coiiimitt-ed to the advocacy of prohibition, and we cannot but regard with the great- I est satisfaction the fact that the Legis- lature has now unanimously affirmed that great principle and has crystallized it into law. With equal satisfaction we con- gratulate the prohibitionists throughout the Island on the fact that the time is ap- proaching when the liquor trams, the cycles-" For Hire. _ For Bale _ Repair Shop wineirr a eo , Lui fruitful source'of so much misery and crime, willbeunder the ban of law in city and country alike, It is due to the firm and uncompromising stand of the churches, the organised temperance bodies and the many staunch prohibi- tionists in all parts of the Province that we are able to congratulate ourselves on that which has been obtained. *-Ol T0 CURB A COLD IN A DAY.
