When they .s.nded It Borden one evening in that pre-war summer of 1933 they did not even know the names of the -main towns in the Province. Thev just followed the highway to sum. mersido and stopped at Human.- View Cabins. They liked it so much that they have returned every summer since that time. al. ihoush they still continue to make other trips. As a matter of fact they just returned from Mexico City before cosninlz here this time. Asked why of all the places on the continent that they have via. had they should choose Prince Ed ward Island to return to annually. Mrs. Van der Merwe said. ''It is the quiet and peace and rest that We set here." They also spoke hixhiy of Harbour View Cabins where the swimming is "the us: in the world." Rain-Making Enpca iments Dr. Van der Merwe is a prom. inent man in the field of physics This past spring he was a member of an advisory committee of scient- ists set up by Mayor O'Dwyer if New York to consider the advisibll- ity of trying out artificial rain- making to end the drouth which had lowered the reservoirs supply- ing the city with water to a dan- gerous level. The condition was .s.. serious that all sorts of measures were resorted tow conserve water such as forbidding men to uhave on certain days and prohibiting the use of water for washing cars The advisory committee was un- anrlmous in recommendl , art-.ificial rain making and the Mayor, acting on their advice, commissioned a Dr. Howell to carry out the experi- ment. This sixr.-rner has been one of the wettest on record and the reservoirs are almost full. Dr. Van der Merwe does not sug- gest that the efforts of Dr. How-31' were responsibl for this un- usually heavy rainfall but he is quite confident that they increased it. There are two methods used, he explains, but the one used by Dr. Howell was the "seeding" of clouds with dry ice which is solid carbon-dioxide. Can Cause Rain Dr. Van der Merwe .says that when rain making experiments are carried out in the laboratory they always work and so it has been proved beyond a doubt.that it can be done. However, inalaboratory one has conditions which are per- fect because they have been ar- ranged. The difficulty in putting the experiments into practice is that one has to wait until condit- ions become satisfactory. It is toward the area. over which rain should fail and then the temper- ature in the cloud must be below zero, cerlttgrade. If these condit- ions are present the -cloud is seed- ciiviso l'llEil'lllE IINSINGTON Monday-Tuesday 7:15-9:15 Thrill to the spectacular exploits of this great fighter-lover in this magnificent screen adventure- "ADVENTUIIS or CA!ANOVA" Starring Arturo De Cordova, Luc- ille Bremer.
