Some two hundred persons sat down to pariake of a sumptuous dinner, which probably cost at least £300. No one would have protested against this senseless waste more strongly than the great man in whose name the fsast was held. The general drift of the speeches was that of good w.il to all men who would un‘eignedly accept the Cobden creed as expounded by his followers, and uncomprising war against those who re- jected it. Looking at the tables, covered with costly fruitand flowers, obtained re- gardiess of expense avd of the season, the suggestion forces itself on the mind that in future the motto of the club should be ltered to ‘‘ Peach at any price. The Government is well aware of the generally pacific feelings of the mass of the people, and with this view keeps its military side 4s much out of sight as pos~ sible. But no sooner does the possibility of war draw nigh than the most peaceful mooks are forthwith occupied by stalwart guardsmon on ov off duty. Moreover, and this is of the most.serious import, with. in the past week all the most favorite walks of peaceable citizens have been invaded by batees of troops in full uniform, under- going their first lessons in the art of prac< tical warfare. Hyde Park swarms with in- fantey every morning, and a crack lancer regiment, just arrived from Brighton, lends its sid in keeping up the ground and ihe outward sembiance of militury duties. In front of the Royal palaces, wherever 4 vacant spot is to be found, recruits are to be seen drilling in the presence of a gaping crowd, which har no other subject of talk for the moment than the brightness of a regimental life. The metropolitsin rates are not so light that rate-payers are’ especially desirous of seeing them burdened with unnecessary charges, vor are the benefits conferred up- on the metropolis by thefniue or ten large owners of property within its boundaries so great that rate-payers can care about adding to theit'incomes, The Marquis of Salisbury, haweyer, appears to think other~ wise. The, Metropolitan Board of Works ‘tad, alter. some hesitation, consented to Undertake the construction of a new street runnibg'from Charing Cross‘ to Tottenham Courtsroad. |'The neighbourhcod travers» ed, that of Seven Dials, is not the most ats tractive, but there is little doubt that a hew and wellsbuilt onaiin aes Se ade come exceedingly , and the value of land be snsasenaie: enhanced. Lord Salisbury, who is the chief proprietor of the land, was quite ready to see the Boaid of Works run their new street through his old, fever-haunted, rickety houses, and was quite prepared to accept a 10 per cent. ad- dition to their real value on the ground of forcible eyectmént; but'he absolutely de- clined tojet the Board of Works at any price obtain the freehold of the frontage on which the new street was to be buit. His Lordship ‘was therefore to see his property quadrupled in value by the money of thé 'rate~payers, and they in return were; to obtain no benefit from their liberality. The result is that the bill is abandoned, and, thanks to Lord Salisbury’s obstinacy and greediness, one of the worst neighbor-~ hoods in Western London is to be left untouched. On Thursday an action from the Ex- chequer, ‘“‘Robinson v. Bruin,” was tried before Under-Sheriff Br -cheli, to obtain compensation for injury inflicted by a dog, the claim being laid at £100. ‘The plain- tift, a waiter, had summoned some persons for an assault, and passiug the shop of the defendant, he saw one of the parties talk- ing. with him, The defendant set his large dog on a little dog the plaintiff had with him, and afterwards on himself, and the animal bit his leg, and caused h:m to be laid up for three months. The jury awarded £40 damages, The lock-out of 10,000 workmea on the Clyde still continues, this being its tenth week, while the shipwrights, whose strike caused the lock-out, have been sixteen weeks Out, Jhe stagnation everywhere appatent has brough* with it much distress and misery amongst ‘poor families. Pe-~ cuniary support is being given ‘rom other trades throughout the country, and the men threaten to hold out four momths yet Many are finding work elsewhere, while the trade in the Ciyde’ is receiving a shock from which it will be a long tame recover~ ing. A meeting of masters and men is announced, but both sides seem deter- mined to rsist t9 the Jast. The Rev. 1. Pelham Daie resumed bis ministrations at St. Vedast’s, Foster-lane, on Sunday. Mr, Dale took the entire duty himseif, except that lessons were rea by two of the choirmen. Morning prayer was choral, the choir turuing to the east at the Giorias. Mr. Dale gave notice that on Wednesday [St. James's Day] there would be a service at a quarter past one, p. m.,alwhich the Kev. Dr. Weet would be the preacher, and that there would be services every Wednesday and Friday at that hour. He selected as hia text the fol- lowing words from the second lesson for the aay: ‘* And there aruse 4 great cry; and "| against God.” | them.”* the scribes that were of the Pharisee's part arose, and strove, saying, we tind no evil in this man: butif a spirit or an angel hath spoken t@ him, let us not fight From these words he drew & comparison between the treatment ot the Aposties of the Gentiles, who, however presecuted, in the end «!ways prevailed, and that of the cler ‘resent day, and he said that ducing tac “hurch’s ens lire history the same consivnt struggle had existed; He was glad to retura to his flock, and for the truth he shouid continue tostruggie. On the retable stood a small wooden cross, two ‘altar lights,’”’ and six smaller candles, with two vases of flowers. There was the usual evening service at seven, At these services the Church was once more well filled to greet the return of the Recior. The following, from the last-published “ Mackieson’s Guide to ~hurches,’ may be in‘eresting, as showing the strength of various movements during the past eight years in the Church of England, due to the various schools of thought. The ine crease -a the number of Churches bui i, and the number of services is very notes worthy - ™~ ———<<— <> <>* Qi> «© @- PURRISH DEVASTATION. A Constantinople despatch, of the 0th, to the. 7imes, says: -* Appalling acconnts continue to come from Karahurat of the nlisery of fugitives from the district deyas- tated by the Basha-Bazouks and Bulyar- ians. Thousands of women and children are homeless and perishing for shelter. Thousands of peo- ple. are homeless. Crops are rotting on the ground, and_ no sort of provision is made for the winter. The correspondent speaks favorably of the conduct of the Vurbish regalars, but severely blames the Goverament for employing or not control- ling the irregulars who scour the country, committing the worst excesses. Even fugitives, women and children, who come for protection to’the Turks, have to be guarded by regular troops lest they should be further injured by these savages, News of the Worid. EUROPEAN. The late Sultan was so curious and thrifty in the matter of diamonds that the Turkish Government has just raised a loau of $10,000,000 upon his collectioi:. A “very qu-et and orderly mob” took Marens Gonzales out of a Colorado jai the other night and hanged him to a telegraph pole, He had murdered an aged couple named Brown who had asked him to stay over night, actually killing Mr. Brown while ,he was taking care of his (Gonzals’) horse. lteturning to the house, the wretch k.lled Mrs, Brown, and left their daughter, Mr, Rice, for dead, obtaining four doliars for his butchery. He escaped to New Mexico, but was hunted down by detec- tives and brought back for trial, aad upon a preliminary examination was positively identified by Mrs. Rice, who, pointing to Gonziies, said, ‘*You are the man who murdered ioy father and mother and near- ly killed me.” He was also suspected of several other murders.
