A big advance in the lake transpor-— tation rates on grain has taken place owing, it is said, to the enormous | shipments of iron ore from Duluth to Buffalo and the chartering of all the available vessels at enormously in- creased rates. The ore shinments have been bidding against the wheat shipments for vessel room at Duluth during the past week, and the result is that there was an advance of one cent a bushel on wheat, of thirty to thirty— five cents oniron and fifty cents a thousand on lumber’in lake transpor-— tation rates. The latest quotations on wheat from Duluth te Buffalo are five centsa bushel, and Winnipeg grain dealersare unable to make contracts from Fort William at less than six cents a bushel to Buffalo, as against about two and a half cents last year, and an anticipated maximum this year of three cents. The supply of vessels at Fort Willizm will, it is expected, be very short, and those now available and in the trade will simply be gold mines during the next few months. The disheartening effect of this so far as Manitoba and the west are con— cerned is to throw an_ additional burden on the grain and lessen the amount thatthe farmer will receive It is usual for rates to take an upward jump towards the close of navigation, but this year owing tothe extraordin- ary movements of iron ore as well as Hughes The Peoples’ Druggist Drugs are expensive, Sometimes they are more expensive than need be. ie And sometimes they are not 69 reliable ae they ought to be. Finlayson, who isa large sroperty owner in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, reports that the heavy rains have almost completely ruined the grain there. One farmer, who represented the ranch owned by Sir Arthur Stepney, had told him the day before he felt that where he had expected 500 tons of grain he now ex- pected one. The fruit crop, too, was practically a total loss, and it would be bad for British Columbia farmers this year. He understood the wet season had covered a large area and would affect the Western States as well. Speaking of mining, Mr. Finlayson said the country was all right in that respect, and plenty of farmers within short distances of Revelstoke, Arm-— strong, and the junction entrance near Crow’s Nest Pass, would find in a few years some valuable mineral deposits. Doctors said Incurable But the Notary, Mr. Lemire, was cured of Kidney Disease in two months by Dr. Chase’s Kidney- Liver Pills. It is only when thoroughly convinced of the superior merit of a remedy that public men will give their sanction. Mr. E. H. Lemire, Notary Public, 1692 Notre Dame Street, Montreal, telis of his re- markable recovery from a severe attack of kid- ney disease. When doctors had failed, Dr. Chase's Kidney-Liver Pills saved his life. He writes: ‘I give this statement, first because it is only just that the merit of Dr. Chase’s Kid- ney-Liver Pills should be made known, and again in order that others may profit by my experience.
