No further comment as to the mental qualities of the young men and women who engage in teaching is necessary. A consideration of t‘.le cost to teach- ers of acquiring an education to qual- ify them for their work reveals the following facts: Many students who leave the public schools before having completed the full course are not only at no expense for their training, but begin to earn immediately, This per- iod of earning continues during the time the gotential teacher is in train- ing, and t e wages are steadily increas- ing, whereas those who aspire to teach are confronted with a. steadily increas- ing expenditure as they advance in their studies. The result is that by the time a young man or woman is quali- iied to teach some of his classmates. who discontinued their studies in an .early grade, are earning more than .most teachers may ever hope to eam in the public schools of this province. _ Illustrations may be given to prove that tthis statement is true. A conservative estimate of tha cost of ii. high school glucation grades nine to twelve in- uslve is $000.00 and on the salaries which the teachers receive. no hope can be entertained ot realizing nnanciaily on this outlay. i The average salaries paid to teachers in Prince Edward Island may be classi- fied as follows 1 _ Average of all salaries S 543.00 Men oi' the first class 'l86;00 Mon ol the second class . . 530.00 Men ot the third class 449.43 Women of the first class .. 633.18 Women of the second class 493.91 Women oi! the third class . 408.10 'rhese salaries when compared with those received by people in other occu- pations are so low that is startiiigly large number of teachers resign an- nually ahd enter upon work which is more rbmuneratlvc. Our women teachers are drawn into nursing, stenography, business, etc., by the higher salaries paid in these occu- pations, and the men are induced to abandon teaching because the future for them ln almost alliother walks oi life offers gl-eater opportunities for advancement and increased remunera- tion. Nor is this surprising when the following annual salaries are consider- from |600. to $1,200.; women clerks with the larger firms averaging about font $1,000. to $2,800., civil servant! from $1,080. to $2.500. or more; biisi- ness employees averaging at least sl,000. In fact no other occupation in Prince ployment, pays such nieagre salaries as those paid to the teachers. ' profession is indeed disastrous. In 1928 of 815 teachers employed, 34'! resigned their positions, 160 of these leaving the profession permanently, and the rest seeking other schools where slightly higher salaries inlgiit be obtained. _ This is an annual occurrence. As a conse- quence. permaneney does not exist within the profession to. a degree that 'will insure general edective teaching. and the continual interchange or teach- ers. oannot help but retard aefiou ly the progress ofthe public schools. A sub- stantial graduated increase in salaries would cause many okthese teachers io continue in the pre ssioii for a coh- siderably longer time. - - This is desirable as schools would than be at a premium, and the trustees would be enabled to select the best among” these who qualify as teachers. Only y stiiili an increase would cori- ilitlons be brought about that would malseit possible for the department of education to ~iiici‘esse the period of ngadsnlic and normal training and so prove the general stetus of educa- tion witliln the province.
