McKay has made some improvements in his dwelling. Judging by the ap- peaimnce of most of the residences in this place one is struck by the taste of the people in having their houses so beautifully painted; among them we might mention Mr. Thos. Haslam, whose house presents a beautiful ap- pearance, as does also Mr. Daniel Mc- A Kays’ not forgetting our old friend Mr. i Jas. McKay, who has his done in keep- ing with the rest. The Presbyterian church has also been painted. and the committee deserve great credit for hav- ing it done. The design of painting has A been the work of Mr. Duncan, of Sum- merside. and reflects the greatest of credit on him, whose ability in this line is hard to surpass. We also under- stand he has bei n engaged to beautify Mr. Stephen Haslams house which has been erected during the past year. Tiir; death occurred at \Vest Point,on Sept. the ltlth, of Stephen Smith aged 50 yt-ar.-‘. The funeral service which took place on the 21st ult, was attend- ed by a large number of people from far and near who came to pay the last tribute of i°=>s;.ect to our departed friend. Upwards of sixty carriages followed the body to its last r. sting place in the Presby erian Cemetery near \Vest Point. The deceastd was ` a man who was loved by his friends and highly ,res- pected by those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. Of him it might. truly be said that he had not an enemy in the world. Among “the boys" he was familiarly known as “Stephen” and his memory will remain with them long after the body has moulderfd to its kindred dust. He will be missed in the social circles which he enlivened by his presence in the Church of which he was a. staunch adherent and by the political party which he faithfully sup- ported during his life time. But whilst we mourn him, we mourn not as those without hope. We feel as- sured that he is called tc the e'~joy- ment of a higher life. and that our loss is his gain.-Coit. ?-i__¢l___.__ Feathers to Stockings il- ` Economical Suggestions for Women and Girls. The hat and bonnet, with its trim- mings of feathers. ribbons or velvet, the silk neck scarf and tie, the cape, jacket, blouse. waist. skirt, sash and stockings, are all outward articles of feminine attire costing considerable money, and demand close attention, so- that daily neatness and good taste he maintained from day to day. When articles of everyday wear such as we have mentioned become faded and dingy, they are ,usually cast aside by the inexperienced and careless, who forget that the garments are still whole and yet serviceab‘e. A few economical suggestions at this time will be useful. Thrifty, wise and economical women and girls know just what to do when confronted wi h such a problem. They _ have a full knowledge of what can he » done with the wonderful Diamond Dyes, these marvellous money- savers,'ald'i they act accordingly. They use Fast! Black Diamond Dyes prepared especi- ally for feathers, which give a deep, rich and lasing black, making that feathers equal to new ones. Their dull -‘ and lifeless silk ties, scaifs, sasbes and gloves are quickly made 'new creationsl by the Diamond Dyes. The faded A jacket, cape, blouse, skirt and gmgkingg are magically transformed to gui; the ; wearer. Wise women know well that failures _ are imp' ssible when the popular Dia- f mond Dyes are used. as the manufac-,3 turers provide sp- cial black dye for T feathers, and special dyes for silk, wool, all cotton, and for every makes mixed. or union goods. 5 CoMi>'roN’s. , Fresh California.
