———— een eee ‘ lieth . we ee cence se —— oe < it rOBER ‘. isso, KING'S COUNTY BXHIbBIT ON. A GOOD SHOW LARGE NUMBERS PRESENT. Tue glorious weather, the growing in- terest in agricultural and ind istrial com petitions, the presence of the Lieutena Governor and a large number of the re- presentative men of the country, the efficient management of the Commissioners and the Secretary, all combined to make Kiny’s County Exhibition a success—and it was 4 SUCCESS. True, the classes ol were not articies large ; but they were choice. In live stock the iuost marked improvement was seen in Messrs. A. C. McDonald, M. P., } Clow and Thomas would cattle. John Keays exhibited animals credit to any Cowan, James which . 24. cae have done exhibition, while other exhibitors, whose names e “afar a to the will be seen on _ reierenct he I are giving prize list, showed that they : } "pe 1; F commendable attention to the breeding of a stock. The horses were few In number, and theugh there they were, onthe whole, were some fine animals on the grounds, hardly up to the standard of the other counties. Inthe pens of sheep and pigs there were some very choice animals. The wheat of Mr. D. Robertson was a marvel to many. It weighed 68 lbs. Imperial measure, and 644 Ibs. Winchester measure; and we have no doubt it will be heard of in St. John, whither it has been sent by the Commissioners. The oats shown by Mr. Jos. D. Campbell, too, than any yet exhibited this season, and wer: judged worthy of being sent to St. were better Joba: and I here was a splendid show of potatoes and other vegetables. Further comments are unavoidably crowded out. Shortly after 12 o'clock, His Honor the Lie’ tenant Governor entered the Exhibi- tion Building and, accompanied by Dr. Muttart, M. P, A. C. McDonald, M. P., F. Brecken, M. P., Hon. D. Gordon, Mr. Hou per, a wa ees L. Kickham, M. L. is J. E. McDonald, M. P. P., Hon. A. A. Mclionald, W. R. Watson, Esq., ee Lewis, Esq., Rev. Mr. McKinnon and other gentlemen was conducted to a raised platform and presented with the following ADDRESS : Toe the Honorable Thomas Heath Q. U., Lieutenant Gorernor. Hie riland, May wr Pueask Your Honor,— We, the Cormissioners appointed to manage the pres- ent Exhibition ot Agriculture and Industry, have much satisfaction in tendering a hearty welcome to your Honor on the occasion of your visit to Georgetown for the purpose of opening the Exhibivon. We can assure your Honor that, personaily, we have endeavored to make it successful ; and wetrust that it may prove, inevery way, as interesting as we believe it to be important to the prosperity of the country. Held at a period some days earlier in the senson than in past years—when the products of the fields are not tully stured—yet it is evi- deut that the labors of the farmers have mei with a fair average return; and we iook for a fine display of agricultural and horticultural products; and a marked improvement in the show of stock. In the other branches ef industry, as well as in the works of artishown, we believe that your Honor will find proofs of steady progress and improvement. ; sae s, The public interest in these exhibitions, which has been awakened during the past few years, seems to be maintained with in- creasing activity in every part of the civilized world—affording evidence of the benetits resulting therefrom, Fully recogmizing this fact, and declaring eur conviction that these exhibitions tend materially to the advancement and prosperity of the people, aud that no expenditure of pub- lic funds is followed by more lasting resuits, nor more beneficial to the true interests oi the Province, we entertain the hope that in each succeeding year a more liberal grant may be made for this purpose. The result of our limited effort at the exhi bition just held an Montreal must prove very gratifying to the people of this Province ; and we bave no doubt will tend to stimulate our farmers to renewed ctlerts in preparing to enter into competition with the people of the elder Provinces. Amid the many causes for thankfulness, during the past year, there is one which has caused sadness and sorrow, to the people of this Province. By the death of your Henor’s pre- decessor, the late Sir Robert Hodgson, the Province has lost one who ever teok a lively interest in all that concerned the welfare ot the inhabitants; aud his name will be cherish- ed and revered, as one of the best of Gover- nors and the most amiable of men. As Commissioners, we have welcomed Your Honor to Georgetown, to open this Uxhibition; but we may go iurther and do se not only on behalf of the inhabitants of this town, but of the whole people of this Couniy, whe are happy to see you amongst them, reviving memories of the past, whea the County, with pride, claimed you as her representative. We all unite in wishing for Your Honor, for Mrs. Haviland and your tamily, all health and happiness. Un behalf of the Commissioners. D,. Gorvox, Chairman, In reply, His Honor spoke to the following effect :— Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am sorry that i cannot find words to ex- press my gratitude for the kind and compli- mentary address I have just received. Till I arrived in Georgetown, { had no idea in the world that such an honor awaited me—more especially as i received an address from you last year on the occasion of my first visit to Georgetown after my appointment to the office Tue Darty EXAMINER, | See neeeeecneectneaeene lof Lieutenant Governer. I] must confess that | when i staud in this Drill Shed, | am fercibiy ‘ea »>time when 1 first represented this district in the Legislature, and when this Island did not occupy the indepenuens posi- tion it does to-day ; aad 1b 1s brought home to me here, that, humanly speaking, 1 18 to Iyou Lam most indebted tor the ollice and posi- t it may be said that this 18 the age of exhibisions. Not only in the old | world, butin Ame-lca, exhibitions are ae this Pominion, this year, 1 dare lsay there W ill -be no | less than a er - | hibitions. Whea ere last year = ipressed some regret that. the Islanc | was not represented at tne Dominion ixhibition then heid at Ottawa. But eet i am happy to say that in the great otruggie for supertority which has recently tones piace at Montreal, and which was open tu the com- whole of Cauada, little Prince took no insignificant part. i high position taken by Our | horses and cattle when placed in competition with those of the older Frovinces. The cattle had to compete with cattle bred by the greatest stock raiser in Canada—perhaps in America—Senator Cochrane. — But 1 believe that the judges had much difficulty in decid- ing whether a heifer of his herd or one sent up from the Island was entitled to the first freminded ot the ; | ' ' ' | tion L now held, feral; and in petition ol the Kdward Island l iecel proud of the gentlemen who was present a good judge ot stock—that had it not been for ole circum. . rue - ~ stance, P. &. Island w ould, for cattle as weil as ter horses, second ph: ce. Of herses LO less than two hundred entries; and an island herse was, in bis class, given the firet prize. With regard to hodas horse, W hich took third prize, Lam informed that had he been or a dark bay, instead of # grey—tne having a prejudice Agaitist grey horses —he i carried oil & Arst prize, and his owner could have sold him for a thousand dollars! \V eo must teel proud, aiso, at the success ot our farmers who seid grain to the Vorminion exhibitien, ihe Clevernor General had a personal interview with our Comuissioner, aud congratulated and again on the courage und enter- induced the Island to send, trom such a tine representatian Lam sure that having there were a biack Canadiaus would have him again prise which sv great a distance, ef her preductions. achieved one their hands to the plough—the farmers of this Proviace will not tur away, but will endea- vor to take a bigher position next year An the Dominion Exbipition to be held at Loronto, Some of the specinens exhibited here to-day are better than those we sent to Montreal. IL see by &@ Siip ol paper just placed Ml my hand, hite oats shown here, Weigh 47 lbs per bushel— which, by the way, Is nearly the same weight as the white vats seni by the island to the St. Jehu ,lexhibitien ; and black that W oats shown here, weight 45 Ibs per bushel, which is two pounds heavier than the speci- men sent by the Advisory Board to St. John ; while wheat on exhibition here weighs nv less than 6S ibs per bushel. Wath respect to the horses ou the ground, I will not express an opinion, ter 1 do not pretend to be a juage, But | do feelthat 1 am a good judge of cattie; aud { must congratulate Any s County, on the very superior stock nuw on the grouuds, ihe more we improve our breeds of stock, the more wealthy we shall become, ‘Khe trade in sending hive stock to the markets of the mother country will, if developed, prove, in the long run to be far more lucrative to our far. miners than the export of vats, potatoes, turnips and other raw materiais. if our farmers wil but turn their attention more than they have dene, to the production ol good souud beel and mutton, IL teel sure that they will succeed; fur not only are we advantageously situated jn being much nearer the briush Market, than the Upper Provinces, but We have a generous soil—a soil which 1 am informed produces better grsses than are to be iound In the other parts of Canada, A successful experiment has, through the energy and enterprise of one ot our merchants, aiready made; and there seems to be no good reason why it should not be followed up, and this branch of commmerce—this source of wealth-—estab- jished in Prince Edward Island. Tor, re- member that this is hot a mere transitory trade. The british Islands caunot possibly produce food cnough tor the millions who in- habit them; and tneretore there must be a coustant demand on the British market for cattle and sheep of the might kinds. It is just as easy to keep a wy Wred animal as itis te keep an ill-breg wha there is this great advantage if Yung animais of the best breeds, that they mature and are fit for the butcher several years carlier than those of the poorer breeds—and are therelere much less expense and trouble to the preaucer, li our farmers and their sons will but stay at home instead of geing out to the wilds ot the North- west, — out ot the reach of civilization-— work with the same energy and abiity that they ,are compelied to exert in other parts of the wor id, and make the most of _their advantages, the Island would soon become literaily and in reality the garden of North America. There is no reason why we should not succeed, We area perfectly independent people. We have free lands and a free government. Weare as free a peopie as there is in the world. We have only to exert ourselves; and, so far as 1 am coucerned, I shallendeavor to de my part by using all the legitimate influence i possess, at the Council board and elsewhere, In the pre- motion of the best interests of the Island, That paragraph relating to Sir Robert Hodgson I cordially endorse. I knew him from my youth—when he practised at the Bar, when he adorned the bench; and I was one of his constitutional advisers wiile he held the oftices of Administrator of the Gov- ernment and Lieutenant Governor. i uonestly believe that throughout his career he bad the true iaterests of the Island ever at heart. i feei thankful to you for the expression of your kind regards for my wife and tamily. 1 peen The following prize list is open to cor- rection,— PRIZE LIST: HOKSES, Best Draft Stallion, Jas.
