His flashing eyes told half his bliss But hers seemed full of silent prayer, As if a mightier voice than his Had named her there. Behind the altar and the ring, Behind the brimming cup love holds, Her timid soul sought wondering, The future's folds. His eyes were sweet; she looked beyond | Through waitin, years of sun and rain, His clasp was dear, she felt the bond That might be pain! Yet he all gladness, she half fear, Gave kisses only of delight; Love touched and brought them close and near That happy night. Long afterward he waked to doubt But she, with care-worn matron grace, Shut patience and passion out, And held her place. And never theught nor word went wild— Content if only she could see His features in the sleeping child Across her knee. Her doubt had end where his begun; She smiled, nor knew the bitter cost At which his prison calm was won— His freedom lost ! —_—_—____-__ -» - = - Scientific Miscellany. In India, cats are sometimes attacked by eholera, according to a French authority, and may communicate the diseass to man. Ata recent scientific meeting in London it was stated that arsenic, in quantities large enough to poison beasts, has been known to find its way through the ground into wells fifty feet distant. Hons. Hallez, a naval lieutenant stationed at Madagascar, states the soil of that Island contains much iron, and that in approaching it the compass un- dergoes considerable and totally abnor- mal variations. It is, therefore, sug- gested that Madagascar may be an enormous magnet. A remarkable phenomenon was wit- nessed at Nykoping, in Sweden, just after midnight,on May 14th. Stream- ers of light were seen to pass suddenly across the northern sky from west to east. The first appearance lasted about a minute, and was followed by a second one of much shorter duration. The weather was dull and rainy. A committee appointed to investigate the discharge of sewerage into the Thames river has reported that liquid entering at Barking is transported many miles up river in the face of the powerful descending stream of land | ter 8. i Macdonald's. Noone had supposed before that sewerage could pollute the water far above the point of its discharge into a rapid river. Several officers of the Russian Navy have devised a scheme for reaching the North Pole on sledges from the New Siberia Islands, the distance being 900 nautical miles. The sledge parties would proceed slowly northward, leay- ing stores along the route to ensure the expedition’s safe return. The scheme isto be submitted to the learned societies of Russia. Two French chemists have investi- gated the question of the temperature at which various explosive mixtures of as and air and become ignited. They ound that a mixture of seventy pores of air and thirty parts of ydrogen gas ignited at a temperature between 1026 and 1028 degrees Fahre- heit, while the ignition point of a mix- ture of coal gas with air in similar pro- portions varied from 1202 to 1215 degrees. A banyan tree is a forest itself, giving shelter and shade to whole villages of huts. Its widespreading branches are supported by many separate stems or trunks, formed by descending vrial roots, which on reaching the ground become fixed as props to the great leafy roof above. Natives of parts of India regard the tree as sacred, and it is not surprising that the deep twilight which always prevails under its dense foliage should impress with awe the simple Buddhist dwellers in its shade. Respect- ing the age reached by this tree, it may befstated that Forkes in his “Oriental Memoirs,” mentions a banyan which was nearly 2,000 feet in circumference, measured round its principal stems, while the ground covered by its branch- es was considerably more extensive. The large trunks numbered 350, and the smaller ones exceeded 3,000. Even the 2,000 feet—or more than one third of a mile—does not represent the full cir- cumference over which this colossal plant’s chief supports had been spread, as a flood tr away avery lurge part of the tree before Forbes saw it, reduc- ing the number of larger trunks from 1,350 to the 350 now remaining.. The banyan belongs to the genus whic) in- cludes the common fig, and is known as the Indian fig.—Ficus Indica. _ Alarming reports continue to come in regarding the damage to crops. in South Carolina by the recent ra.vs. The rainfall has been the heaviest sor years. The damage to small grain alone is $50,000. The Northern Pacitic has discharged all the white men on some of its Western sections, and filled their places with Chinamen.
