After reviewing his public career and eulogizing his indomitable energy and pluck inface of defeat, and ex- pressing regret at his retirement, the Presse, says: ‘‘He has always been exceedingly favorable to the French-Canadians, whom he has always treated with justice, liberal- ity, and generosity. THE scheme of the British Army reform as foreshadowed by the Lon- don Daily Mail, will be studied with universal interest. The army is, apparently, to be modelled after something very like the systems in vogue on the Continent. The Brit- ish private will become a trained soldier, and instead of an insufficient few weeks’ training in the year he will in future have to undergo ten months of most rigorous and scien- tific training. Thisis reform with a vengeance and is_ likely to be well received. In the past the British army manoeuvres have been one oi the weakest features in the military o s&s is his system. and have otten been ridi- culed by Frenchand German ex- perts. Now. however. it is said there will be extensive powers for the ho'ding of manceuvres ona large scale, and considerable areas of land are to be acquired for the pur- pose. The scheme, if it should bea genuine one, will mark England’s military history. sow tiiiaiuaimaas aeiiaiiile etitente Headache Biliousness, sour stomach, constipa tion and all Rver ills are cured by | Hood’s Pilis The non-irritating cathartic. | moral | BRITISH TARIFF.
