Ai>w¢ha¢i»°°r~_____ _ \ \ \\\ \\\\\\ lnviolosihoos \ As a result of the vigorous discussion of educational questions by Col. Francis W. Parker of Chicago, at the-T recent convention of the Teachers Association, much thought has been awakened in educational questions, and discussion of the question has followcd in the press and on the street, by the members of School Board, by teachers and by the general public, the thorough awakenin g of which always lcads to some results. None will deny that thcre might be better things for the Province education- ally than we have. This can only bc obtained by there being a consensus of opinion on the part cf teachers, sohool authorities, and the more intelligent of the citizens, as to what reforms are needed and then a united effort made to secure the same. If we are not prepared at one full stroke toiowecp away our present system -and it is to be presumed that we are not-and to adopt an entirely new one, based upon more scientinc or rather humanitarian principles, than 'those which- obtain in our present system; yet there should be a move forward. There are certainly many needed reforms that may be adopted under our present system. Through the munitlcence of Sir Wm. McDonald of Montreal, Manual Train- ing has been provided for a portion of the boys attending the public' schools. The results of this experiment is good. The pity is that every boy is not able to avail himself of this privilege.i T _ _ Nothing has yet been done in the sa me line for girls. Im portant in Manual Training for boys; it is very much more important that our girls should be educated in the principles of Domestic Science, or as it is now called' in the best school ofthe continent and of Europe “Home Economics." What is more conducive tc the happiness and prosperity ot a community then that the homes should be well ordered i What has more to do with the well-ordering of the home than the capability of the wife and mistress of that home to efficiently conduct it i There are many homes, it is not too much to say, the majority of our homes in which the opportunities for the daughters to learn the best of domestic economy is not all that they might be. It is an indisputable fact that for the maj ority of the girls attending our public schools an instruction in thc art of making a loaf of bread, As good dinner and making a plain serviceable garment would be better than a knowledge of Latin Conjugations, Enluid’s Elements or the Cube It has been proven, however, wherever Domestic Science has been added to the curriculum of a school, that those who took it were quite as prodolent ‘at the end of the term in what is commonly considered the scholastic subjects, as -were tnosn who did not and had their Donestio science in addition."
