I graduate of McGill (me of Canada's mast distinguished literary critics, an authority in Quebec literature, a novelist and screen writer, ROnald Sutherland will be reading from his 'work at UPEI at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 23rd. ’ The reading will take place in the basement of University where he received a B.A. (1954) and an M.A. (1955). He began his Ph.D. at the University of Glasgow in Scotland on a. ‘McGill- Glasgow Exchange Fellow— ship, and completed it at Wayne State University, Detroit, in 1959. Currently, Dr. Sutherland is .head of the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of _ Sherbrooke, Quebec, but he is perhaps best known as one of the leading English authorities on Quebec literature in ' be reading from his novel, to— date, Professor Sutherland will deliver a public lecture at Great George Street Gallery,the next evening— -i.e., at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 24th. The lecture, entitled "The Empty Cradle", will contrast Quebec Govern— ment cultural policies with what is actually happening in current Quebec literature and society. He has also written for films, one of his most recent screenplays being for Suzanne (RSL Films) which was based on his novel, Lark des Neiges, and released in 1980.
