Shively, secre- tary of the anti-monopolist committee, dis- peliing all doubts regarding Butler’s candidacy tor the presidency on the independent ticket, and stating definitely and positively that he willrun. Shively expressed his almost abso- lute certainty that Butler would be a candi- date with the endorsement of the green-back- ers, anti-monopolists, and probably the labor- ingmen, Batler’s refusal, at present, to make a public statement, Shively says, is prompted by a convention of labor representatives tv be held in Chicago on July 30th. = > DckinG the month of June there were 167 fires in the United States and Canada, the aggregate loss of which was in the neighbor- hood of $5,800,000, while the smaller fires which have escaped notice would probably increase this total by many thousands, The total loss by fires in the United St:ts, and Canada since January Ist is esti- mated at $53,750,009, an access over the fire loss for the first six months of 1883 of more than $8,€90,C00. ‘The average cost of fires in the two countries during the past ten years for the first ha'f year has been about $45,000,- 000. If the amount of this loss were levied on the community in the shape of taxes there would be a rebellion. o > NEARLY twenty mass meetings were held on the 20th in various towns throughout Eagland to denounce the action of the house of lords in regard to the franchise bil. The tories are organizing counter-demonstrations to the movement of the laboring classes in regard to the franchise bill, to be held in London and at Liverpool and Manchester. Lord Ro‘esdale provoses to settle the existing difficulties by adjourning instead of proroguing parliament. The government will bring up the question of the redistribution of parliamentary seats at the autumn session, while the houses of lords will discuss the franchise question. This pro- position the liberals will refuse. _ a - A CORRESPONDENT of the Moncton Times writes frora Point du Chene :—The yacht Sun- beam arrived at Point du Chene Saturday night, from Summerside, with a number of Charlottetown g-ntlemen on a cruise in the Gulf. The assets will, it is supposed, barely cover the expenses connected with winding up the estate. The credulous per- sons who yave over to the firm the $17,000,000 of their saving: will, therefore, not get a single cent. No worse case of swindling has been recorded in late days. The mana- gers kept neither cash-book nor jourval, and such a thing as striking a balance does not seem to have been thoughtof, What the firm denominated profits were obtained by re-hypothecating the secu sities taken by Grant & Ward for larger sums than they had ad- vanced on them, and treating the margin as ains.
