A Farmer's Sorrow. Ths clouds look low and heavy, as if there would be rain ; lt always means bad weather when you hear the brook so plain. The wet won’t make much trouble now for all the creps are in, And yet I somehow hate to see the long rains begin. Ll couldn't sense the half I read, the air is close and still ; lf I were young as ones ! hill lt isn’t as it used to be and go, And keep upon my feet all day; now I am still and slow. 2° Pd go upon the we when 1 could come There's nothing in the paper, you can take it t you cho Se 5 I can’t make head nor tail of half they nowa- days call news ; IT used to think the Farmer was head of all the rest, "Twas full of solid common sease ; I tell you that’s the best ! What does a plain, old-fashioned man care whether stock goes down ? My stock is all four-foc ted !—but ’twill please the folks in town. Here’s new machines preached every week, to asp the folks that sell ; Aud feshions for the women folks, and other trash as well. "Twas reading all this nonsense here, in winter by the fire, That mads my boy get notions of the schools and elimbin’ higher It used to be so snug and winter’s night With anow clicks at the roaria’ fire for light, warm a stormy window and the Rut there he sat, all doubled up, @ storin’ that away ; Readin’ and readin’, till I said ‘twas more like teii than play ; Readia’ and readin’, tillI found he coulda't work a stroke, And eouldn’t hold the plow an hour,or hardly hit a yoke. it stole his mind from farmin’, and he ran ap tall and thin ; I fought him hard enough at first, but after- ward gave in; They got the minister te come his mother took his part, Until I iet them have their way, although it broke my heart. "Twas woll enough for them to talk, aad I wan't going to fight; And then my mind got so distressed,I couldn’t sleep at night Folks tvik of edication as if the Latin showed A eo how to cast accounts or how to stack a load, Bat, as I say, I had to cope with mother and with Dan, And then they got the minister, a good, well- meanin’ man, Aud Dan, he said, must have his chance, and pretty soon I see The book foola and the women folks would be too much for me. So Dan he got his schoolin’, and never no complaint : When I give im I don’t take back, but "twould have tried a saint ! [never knew the crops to fail as they did those years, Or money be so hard to get, and I was full of fears. i never grumbled at his bills, but paid them one by one; And when the boy came home again with all his schoolin’ done, I couldn’t ask him out a-field, or let him doa stroke, He looked izst like a white-skinned birch, and i felt like an oak. Bat that was twenty years ago, and here we be to-day, And I've got old and stiff, you see, and was once like play. I have to hire strange folks, or else must let alone — Silas ia wilia’, wants to work, but he’s a boy half grown, Now, be’s the kind of lad I like; his cheeks look bright and warm ; If I conid have my way, I kaow, I’d let him have the farm. Although he’s but a cousin’s sop, he docs seem near to me, Yes, nearer, I must say it straight—that Dan could ever be. Dan's professor, avd they say he knows as rauch 24 most, But he don’t know and never will, how much his learnin’ cost. ‘Twas him who shou'd have had the place; "twas father’s ‘fore ’twas mine; I'd like to keep it in the name, but I ain’t goin to whine, Mother she’s had it pretty hard; we needed Dan, that’s true; Ana i would keep him right aS home, if I began life asw. Farmin’s the honest work of men; if other folks must thrive, S me of us must stay at home and keep the farm alive. Dan's kind of disappointed — he sees he ain’t the first; There wan't the makings of the best, and yet he ain’t the worst; They call him a good scholar, but there’s much he’s learned im vain, If he don’t think he’d farm it, if he could Start again. oom + —— Peculiar Custom. The people of Guatemala, a corres- pondent writes, have a peculiar way of preparing their coffee for the table. Every week or so a quantity of the berry is ground and roasted, and hot water poured slowly upon it. The black liqaid whieh drips through is permitted to cool, when itis placed in a_ bottle and set upon the table like vinegar or Worcestershire sauce. Pots of hot water and milk are furnished, with which the cold black syrup may be diluted as required. This plan has its advantages, but it takes time to become accustomed to it. +--+. His Choice. A Judge, joking a young lawyer, said—*If you and I were to be turned into a horse or an asa, which would you prefer to be?” “The 288, to be sure,” replied the lawyer. “I,ve heard of an ass being made a jadge, but a horse— never. a _ Four Tuovsaxp Yarps of Print Remnants just opened at J. There was a time io England when lamps were entirely ont of use in the |hovse of the wealthy and candles were burned as luxuries, and at the present }time no British nobleman invites his| guests to table where the illumination | is by anything less expensive than wax candles, and t»e Queen has never given udrawiogroota where either lamp light or gas light was used, only wax candles must shine.
