No definite woxd as to the arrival of the eteam- er has been received by the railway authorities here, but in view_ of the satisfactory reports received from Montreal as to her trial rims it 18 expected that _the steamer will shortly be put into operation. An erroneous report from Moncton, glv ing July 1 as the date of the ina1l8' uration of the new service, evident- ly referl'¢d'to the successful out- come of the steamer’s two-day speed trials on the St. Lawrence. On this test, the exceptional speed of 15 1-3 knots was maintained over a dist- ance of six miles. The fuel C011' sumption was less than expected, and the vessel was found to draw three inches less than provided for. ADDRESSED CIVIL SERVANTS _Mi-. W. J. Callaghan, ottawa, see retary of the Civil Service Feder- ation of Canada, addressed a very enthusiastic group of Civil Servants in the Legion Hall on Thursday evening. Mir. Callaghan, a former Islander, is a pleasing and most 0011 vlncing speaker, and in his short 'address gave a 00110180 SYf10P515 01 the workings of the federation- what it has accomplished in the past and what it hoped to accom- plish in the future. In his closins remarks he strongly .advised e'v¢1'Y Civil Servant to become a. member of an Association affiliated with 'the Federation and pointed out the benefits to be derived from Sllch membership. At the conclusion of the address, in a. hearty vote of thanks moved by Mr. S. T. Gallant, Supervisor of Fisheries, and second- ed by Mr. Leo Bradley, of the Pre- ventive Service, the appreciation of the Civil Servants present was ex- pressed and extended to the speaker who replied in a fitting manner. ` PERSONALS Mrs. Henry Mutlow, and daught- er, Bertha left Wednesday morn- ing on a visit to Mrs. Mutlow‘s sister, Miss Gertrude Waterman, Cambridge, Mass. -__..- . mv. Colo., July 3.-(U.P.)_ Carl Brke, a rancher, narrowly es-4 caped death in a battle with an en. raged bear. He discovered the bear battling a cow who sought to pro- tect her calf. The mother-instinct in the cow was strong, and the or- dinarily passive bovine was stabbing frantically with her homs in an en- deavor to keep the bear from the tiny calf. The battle, however, was unequal, and Brke ran home for a. gurl. He returned with a shotgun, and fired beth barrels at the bear, shattering one of its fore-legs. The bearpromptly charged its attacker, and Brke fled for his life into a barn. The bear followed, and Brko jumped from stall to stall, to escape the maddened animal. The rancher finally escaped and got into the house again, securing additional shells. As he emerged. the bear, limping away, turned again to the battle. Rising on its hind feet, the ani- mal waddled toward the man. B':k¢ fired, but the bear continued itl awesome walk toward him. The rancher fired again and again. At the sixth shot, when it was a yard from him, the bear toppled over dead. ` SAN ANTONIO _ T0 HONOR SAINT SAN ANTONIO, Tex., July 8._ (U.P.)-This city will pay homage July 13 to its namesake and pa- tron salnt-St. Anthony. ‘ Solemn ceremonies recalling the 18th Century, with high church dignitaries omciating, will mark the seventh centenary celebration of the death of St. Anthony here and wherever Catholics gather throughout the rest of the wu:ld. St. Anthony was described by| Pope Leo III as "the saint of the whole world." Eighteenth Century Catholics knew him as the wonder worker oftheir church. When the franciscan friars are rlved here' with the Spanish sol- diers more than 200 years ago they dedicated the Alamo to St. An- thony's memory. ll*:om St. Ana thony's name as a boy, Fernando, is derived the name of the San Fernando cathedral here, where the services will be held. Bom in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195, St. Anthony at five made a vow of chastity in honor of the immaculate purity of the Blessed Virgin, con- secrating himself to celibacy. At 15 he joined the Canons of St. Augustine in Lisbon, remaining there two years. Later he went to the parent house of the u:der at Coimbra, where he spent eight years place. _-_._-M.
