'I'hey still laugh at "Cecil the Seed" but not when he's on the pitching mound. A year ago he was Just a rookie with a crazy windup, but now he ranks as one of the foremost pitchers of the American League. When Caraway winds up ne seems to be tracing the design of a pret- zel in the air. The motion is decep- tive and confusing to batters. "The most unusual" pitcher 1 have ever seen," is Donia Bushs way of describing Caraway! pitch- ing style. From the start of the 1030 sea- son Caraway has been one of the leading pitchers of the league. Re- cently over a stretch of four games he allowed only 17 hits, or an aver- age of four and one quarter hits psr game. ' when Caraway was pitching for the Topeka western League club in i929, Dick Kinsella, scout for the New York Giants, looked him over and wired John J. McGraw: "No fast bail. Won't do." The White Sox bought him for $6,600 and he has turned out to be one of the best investments made by that club in years. During the 1980 spring training season Caraway got home-sick and didn't want to stay with the club. He kept asking Bush perpermisslon to go home for a few days. Bush finally asked him what ~he wanted to go home for. "Well, 1 want to get my over- coat. It's going to be cold up north," Caraway replied. Caraway calla his curve ball "a swerve ball." One day Bush asked him if he was a good fungo hitter and he ans- to myself.’ He is six feet four inches in height and pery slim, weighing about 1'75 pounds. _'He is 24 and lives in Gordon, Texas. In his first year in the majors he won i0 games and lost 10 and had an earned run average of 3.89. Customs Cutter Chaleur, Capt- ain Heather, has sailed. Bchr- Mona.
