IO:.I '0 J .. t-77' It is doubtful if anybody walked :out of the Forum on Wednesday 'nlght not feeling that they had en- joyed a really exciting hockey contest alter witnessing the Saint John Beavers take a narrow 6-5 overtime victory from Islanders. It was a hockey match that pro- vidcd a thrill-it-minute without any rough house tactics being used to accomplish it. . . . It was an odd game too, that brought about two teams playing entirely different styles of hockey and fit the same time making it intm'estin:;. Islanders played an aggrcss.it'e. every-man-up game may kept their opponents under heavy pressure (llll'lIliZ most of the contest. while the Beavers came tup with a kitty-bnr-the-door per- and capatalized on levery opening with fast breaking attacks and smart passing. The style paid off in the final coo Led by n tricky Buck Whltlock. who turned in his most lmpresive performallce with Beavers over Charlottetown ice this season. the Les Rmlsay-coached crcw bat- tled their way out of a five- minute bottleneck right from the start of the game to bang the ffrst. goal home nt 7:46. which was the first shot of the night on goalie l-lai Gordon. The latter nev- er had :1 chance on the play. how- ever. when Whltlock went in on him all alone after Ossle Carnccic had set him up in the clear halfway in from the Island- ers blucline. 1 I O Carnegie himself. repeated the performance from a similar situ- ation at l2:28 of the frame which sent. Beavers into a two-goal lead. that despite Islanders tzanging tactics. remained intact for the rest of the frame. It was a great. debut for the Beavers new de- fcnceman before local fans. set- ting up the first goal. his own cf- fort was the result of a one-man attack from behind his own blue- line that caught the fancy of the crowd right from the start and re- mained lmpressive for Beavers throughout tho entire encounter. . 9 . Islanders continued the presssure into the second period, only this time it paid off. Cwganlzing their attacks smoothly. Islands-is bored in to come up with four goals in ten minutes of play in a glittering oerformance that was by for their best effort of the night. The de- fensive tactics and goaltendlng of Beavers didn't, hold up under the pressure like it did in the opening session. and Islanders shooting wasi much more on the target, a big lm-. lot of wild The Islanders 'splurge didn't end the period scoring. however. Fast- breal.-lng attacks by Beavers paid nff with two more goals. and another powerful attack by the locals saw the period end 4-3 for Islanders. One goal by Saint John in a tightly contested third canto that tied the score 5-5. and another in a. rousing overtime frame gave the visitors a well-earned win. The payoff coal was also from an open break after Islanders had hammered around the Saint John cage for nearly nine minutes of the extra canto. O O I For the first time this season local fans saw the Islanders defence a bit lacking and wobbly, which was one of the big reasons why Beavers made the most of the breaks. The other was too many useless penal- tles. They didn't. check like they usually do. and two or three errors in judgement cost. them goals. In I brief talk with big Phil Vitals yesterday, he was the first to admit that he wasn't up to par. Phil of course elected to blame the whole show on himself-always ready to go to bat. for the rest of the team whether it be a fight. or I mistake- but it; was not just Phil alone. None of the defence seemed to be click- a HALIFAX. Jan. fax St. Mary's John Beavers 6-2 tonight to boost their margin to seven points over the third place New Brunswick club in the Maritime Senior Hockey standing. Five goals in the second period when they ran through the Beavers as they pleased gave the Saints their margin. It. was a hot and cold hockey game with most of the thrills coming ill the last. 10 minutes of the third frame when the game opened wide. The Saints were never behind but it took a starry job of net minding by Eddie D'Aoust in the third stanza to hold off the hard-pressing Beav- CPS. Irish had a slim edge in the first frame when the clubs divid- ed a brace of goals. In the sec- ond. the Halifax defence was so light that Beavers were able to get only one shot at the Halifax net. D'Aous1 fanned on lhe drive but it was the only time during the grime that he looked bad. In the scoreless third period. both clubs were bulked by the stellar net minding of the rival goalies.
