Pome iene Renmin Progress in Ocean Navigation. oo If this were not an age in which men | had almost ceased to wonder, and had aitogether censed to wonder much and {to wonder long, the swift development ; steam marine of iron well be offered to the of our merchant and steel might astonishment of mankind, A hundred | years ago Henry Cort's great invention for rolling ire n bars and plates had not been devised, and nothing in the shape oi, ate ¢ which abi ‘ould be oF iron p ates OF which ups could ve built existed Even 50 years ago although several canal boats and some | few coasting steamers had been con- structed of iren, two or three had made | fea Voyages on the way to their destina- | tions, the construction of iron ships for | ocean navigation, if thought of and| spoken of, had not yet commenced. { But now it is a matter of daily practice | fer the American and Englishman to step on board a steam palace ot steel, and sweep across the vast sea desert that separates their shores at the rate of 20 milesan hour. In eight days you pass from Pall Mallto Broadway. The City of Rome and theAlaska have each steamed over the between Sandy Hook and Queenstown in 6 days and 22 hours. As a means of compar- ing this ocean speed with what was happening before the days of iron bulls propelled by steam engines, it may be instructive and amusing toreferto a piece of evidence once given to a com- mitteé of the House of Commons. The Captain ofa sailing troop transport stated that on one occasion lying wind- bound in the Downs, with troops for the West Indies, in company with another vessel similarly employed and. having the same _ destination. aslant of wind came out and he got away down Channel, After an ordinary outward voyage he exchanged troops and made an ordinary voyage home again, many and many a long week elapsing, nevertheless, before he again cast anchor between the Forelands. But when he did so, he had his old com- panion for a companion again, for the slant of wind that sufficed for the one was insufficient for the other, and there she had lain “above her beef-bones” ever since. It is to the introduction oi iron and steel into ship—building that We owe the vast improvements in ocean speed. Neither the strength to resist the enormous strains of moderate en- gines, equivalent to 10,000 horses, nor the length and fineness of form required for the acceptance, so to speak, of high speeds, could have been obtained all the time wien wood was the sole ship- building material. With iron and steel as our material we may be a long way at present from limit to speed and size. And yet the change in size has been very striking. We may give an instance which will illustrate this, and at the same time illustrate the growth of pro- fessional opinion on these questions. M Dupuy de Lome, «afterward chief naval architect of the French Navy under Napoleon, III., made a_profes- sional visit to this country in 1842, He went to Bristol, and there inspected the Great Britain, then buildiag. Ina re- port which he subsequently made to his Government he referred to that ship as ‘*the most gigantic experiment ever tried in the naval department,” and stated that “The proportions of the bull depart altogether from any experiment previously made,” The Great Britain was 274 feet io length; the City of Rome is 686 feet.—Sir EB. J. Reed, in the Contemporary Review. distance No Man's Land. Labrador is apparently a legal ‘no- man’s-land,'for the governments are just now denying in turn that they have jurisdiction over it. The question has been raised by some speculators who wish to locate mining claims on the part of Labrador opposite Belle Isle. They first applied to the offeials of Newfoundland, but were informed that | the region did not belong to the Island They then visited theDominion Govern- ment with the same request, but after profeund study, the Canadian officials conclude that the sterile shores are not theirs to grant, and suggest that Nova Scotia be interviewed. The original charter of that Province covered the territory now included in New Bruns- wick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia proper, and also the mainland as far northward as Ungava Bay. Should the mineral deposit prove to be of mach value, the venerable title will doubtless be readily asserted. ~~. — Special Notices. By its use ligt or red hair may be darkened, thin hair thickened, and balduese often, though not always, cured. It checks falliig of the hair, and stiwu- lates a weak and »'ekly growth to vigor. It prevents aud cures suri and dandruff, and heals nearly every disease peculiar to the scalp. As & Ladies’ Hair Dressing, the ViGor is unequalled ; it coutains neither oil nor dye, renders the hair soft, glossy, and silken in appearance, aud iniparts a delicate, agreeable, and lasting perfume, Mr. C, P. BRicnER writes from Kirby, 0. July 3, te82: “ Last tall my hair commenced falling out, and in a short time I became nearly bald. I used part of a bottle of AYER'sS HAIR Vigor, which stopped the fail- ing of the hair, and started a new growth, | have now a full head of hair growing vigor- ously, and am convinced that bui tor the use of your preparation 1 should have been entirely bald.” J. W. BOWEN, proprietor of the Mc Arihur (Ohio) Enquirer, says :“ AYER'S ITAIR Vigor is a most excellent preparation for the ha'r, I speak of it from my own experience, jis use promotes the gous of new hair, and makes it glossy and soft. The V1G0R is also a sure cure for dandruff. Not within my knowleige has the prepafation ever failed to give entire satisfaction,” Mr. ANGUS FARBAIRN, leader of the celebrated * Fairbairn Family” of Seottish Vocalists, writes : W Veh, 6, 1880: “* Kver since my hair begius i. ..5¢ 6i)- very evidence of the change which fleeting time procureth, 1 haye used AyxeR’s HaIR Vicor, and so have been able to maintain anu aypearinee of youthfulness —a matter of considerable consequence to ministers, ora- tors, actors, and in faet every one who lives in the eyes of the public.” Mrs. 0. A. Prescort, writing from 18 Elm S?., Charicstown, AJass., Apri! 14, 1882, says: * Two years age about two-thirds of my hair came off. It thinned very rapidly, and J was fast growing bald. On using AYER’s HAIR Vicor the falling stopped and a new growth commenced, and in about a month my head was completely covered with short hair. It has continued to grow, and is now as goed as before it fell, I regularly used but one bottle of the Vicor, but now use it occasionally as a dressing.” We have hundreds of similar testimonia’s to the efficacy of Avrr’s Hair Vicor, It needs but a trial to eouvinuee the most skepti- cal of ite value, rREPARTD BY Dr. J.C.
