THE BAILS EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN AUGUST 6, 1900 ——— SANATORIA FOR CONSUMPTIVES ‘Extent of Gonsumption’s Ravages, SOMETHING OUGHT TO BE DONE Dr. McNeill Advises Establishment of Sanatorium in Suitable Locality. Sir,~—Can anything be done in Char lo\tetowa or Prioce Edward Island to form an “anti.consumption league,” 48 in Ustario and other places? It has been said that “ consumption causes more than twice as many deaths as small-pox, diph. theria, scarlet fever, typhoid fever, measies and whooping cough put to gether;” and reliable statistics allege that consumption causes one death out of every eight from other causes—that of all people who die between the agés of 15eand 69, po less than 137 out of every 100 die of this disease. That between the ages of 25 aud 35 nearly one-half is caused by consumption; thatin this Dominion it claims each yeer no less than 9,000 vic- time, Prof. Koch’s discovery of tye tubercle bacillus in 1882 with subsequent scientific experiments and clinical experience in every Civilized Jand hae proved the follow- ing facts :— 1. That Consump ion is oot hereditary. 2. That it is a contagious disease. 3. That Consumption is produced bv a germ introduced into the body from with- out by inbaling minute dried particles of the sputa fl ating in‘the air,and by food,— especially miik from tuberculous cattle. 4, That in advance stages of disease millions of these germs are thrown off in the sputa each day by a single individual. 5. That consumption is preventable and curable. The rich can protect them- selvee, but what about the poor of Char- lottetcwo and P. E. Island. An auti- consumptive league should be formed at once. An appeal snou'd be made to the benevolentand charitable to come tothe reecue of the people—to prot ct the pubs lie and to give toour children a land in which consumption will be ao unknown disease. In order tu remove the fears of some itis well tosay that “ sanacoria ” are homes scientifically arranged with the advantages of fresh air and proper tood, etc. under medical guidance in such @ way that the patient will have the best chance for health, and at the same time to ceep che contagious element under control. By forwing a provineial or city association tn this Province, one cap become affi iated with a Dominion association On similar lines for holding a Dominion Congress whieh will meet, say pext year, that is, if we follow the wake ofthe other Provindes now leading in this matter. In the Province of Ontario, there is «9 private sanatorium at Gravenhurst—bas a beautifal location and a fine building. There is a man in this city under treat- ment, aod.in order to save him he should ye at once removed to a sanatorium, but un fortunately he nor his friends have not tie means to send him to Gravenburst in Ovtario. There are many localities near t \is city tnat could be utilized if the pub- ic would arouse themselves to realize that public effort must be put forth to S.v+ thos2 now im health as well as those afiicted. We need not go very far inland tor @ suitable vailey or bill where in fine wether the air is bracing and pure ; and & sanatorium should be started on a amall ecale to test the matter and give the af- fl cted a chance. A Provincial Board of Health shor!d be formed, or the city Board of Health mighi take the initiative in this matterand pass sules snd regulations for the guidance of Ot patienis and houreholds. It ought to b+ ewy in my Opinion ta form an associa - to combat tuberculosis in the city ot Charlouetown. Government and muni- cipal aid might be obtained, supplemented by the people through churches, societies, etc. Who will voluoteer to inauzurate a put lic mee'ing in this behalf and make a commenceiwent in this matter? I appeal to the press and to the churches to arovee public opinion in behalt of the consuin px tives of this City and Province, Yours, R. Macwnet.t, M.
