The sceneis-'a` recruit- ing rally . usually at someoutlying* point._ A Liberal speal'ier'_ appears. As ._i often as not he is amen who occupies V , a 'place of some prominence in the _ country and has held oillce in the last Liberal Government. He appears at ‘_ the meeting as the chief speaker for the stimulation of recruiting in the] district».He begins a patriotic speech. ' declares that the cause is just and ii that the need for more men is great. As he goes on his speech becomes less and more of a stump speech in aid of the Liberal party. The occasion is _ used for an attack ‘upon the'Govern- ment, Sometimes it is done more clev- ~ erly than ntothers. because some of if the men who deal in this kind of thing are less expert than others. but the _ object is always the same though at i times the_ work is crude. Guard Aagalnet It There are a number of adjectives which might be used to describe a campaign of this kind, but it is not necessary to use them. _The mere statement of tile case should be suffi- cient to brand the thing for what it ls. and to ‘put the -people on their suard against it. The Liberal part in Canada has suffered enough at the hands of its leaders. during the last few » years without being obliged to take upon itself the shame of this last method - borrowed from the -political' under- _ world. The Canadian people are in i no mood to have the serious business ` of enlistinent fashioned into a. means for addressing the propaganda of any political party. Tliore is too inucli at stake. lf men like Hon. Rodolplic Lemieux are unable to distinguish between what is clean and- what is unclean, they will learn the differ- ; ence from the people themselves. The Worst OFFENDERS The worst offenders are tliose who talked the loudest of is. - political " truce. who have declared not once ‘ or twice but many times that poll- tics should be set aside. lt was Mr. Lemieux who protested against the holding of a war election and dc- clared that it would be a crime. and yet lie goes before one _audience af- ter another in Quebec. meetings call- ed in th_c -interest of recruiting. and seeks te plant the seeds of party discord. A man so acting risks the application of a 'very ugly word. Unity of action comes from unity of purpose. and the one great pur- pose of Canadians at this time is to prosecute the war to a vlctorloiis issue. The man who seeks to a les- _ ser purpose to the prejudice of this » great national resolve. takes upon _ himself a very heavy responsibility. ‘ ________--- P. E. I. BAPTIST QUARTERLY HAZELBROQK.
