TERRIBLE SOBNES, |: Bodies Crushed and Mangled, A WONDERFUL ESCAPE, 4 CURIOUS FEATURE down with the wreck. Nota serap of iron remained attached to the abutments and but for the chasm and awful wreck beneath there is nothing to indicate that a _ bridge spanned The wrecked bridge lay under the debris pied by the side of one of the splen lid cars. It was one of main iron. ‘The girders of the bridge shows clean new fracture through its entire breadth. The opinion is generally express ed by those who personally inspected the wreck that the breaking of this girder was the cause of the disaster, but there is much doubt as to the cause of the breaking of th girder. It is stated by some that there was a jarring and bumping sensation just before once the abys the crash, which gives color to the theory that the fourth car was the tirst to go through the bridge; that it was derailed and thrown’ from the bridge; that it struck the ties of the bridge with such force as to cause its he Vy iron supports to give way. It is the opin- ion of some people that an old flaw weak- ened the truss or girder to such an extent that when the full weight of the train came upon the bridge it caused the remaining ction of the truss to give way, allowing the entire structure to fall. ANOTHER FACT bearing upon the cause of the disaster is the condition of the cars which went over the bridge with scarcely less damage than was inflicted the coaches that went through. The first sign of violence upon the wood work of the second truck of the firat car of the train is a violent blow from undernesth. Vhe fracture is heavy. There tx 10-inch oak timbers in the frame-work upon wert of the truck; the blow was so heavy, that the truck was lifted from the track and derailed the car ENGINEER WHITE across the bridge he felt thought might be caused however, could says when going a shock which he by a broken axle. not have been the cause of the accident, as the trucks of the first two cars are in good condition, except in regard to the fractured timber r. The only remaining possible cause of : nt is a broken rail; and it is Keattfal | ie investigation into this point could result satisfactorily, as there are so many pieces of broken and twisted ratls snarled up ae the wreck. The bridge was built fifteen years ago, and during the past ten years was repaired three times. The original wooden truss was replaced with iron girders ten years ago. ie i ilis, oak 1 ide REMOVING THE DEBRIS. The workmen have allday in removing street and embankment.
