CIIIJBTIAN IIELATIONS By Maurice Smith A business man, sleepless. toss- ing in his Pullman berth, wonder-g it he has done everything possible to improve working conditions in his plant. As a result, the Bristol Manufacturing Corporation oi Bristol, R. 1.. inaugurates a truly Christian experiment. Maurice 0, Smith. Jr.. president oi the cor. poratlon, relates the fascinating story 0! a new departure ior a business concern. “God is our partner" is a reality in the Bristol Msnuiacturing Cor- poration. \ our plant recently created a new department--the Department of Ch:'ls.lan R.e.ations. its head and vice president of our company is Rev. This department will be devoted exclusively to the service or God and to a policy oi unseliishness. our instructions to the Rev.’ Date D. Dutton are simply these, "go about doing all the good you on. iind to do in this world. and look in God for His leadership, not to the directors or oiiicers or our company." Three men are responsible for this venture: company treasurer William H. Smith, who is my brother and who originally re. commended the idea, Rev, Dole D, Dutton and myself. First, some oi the background. in 1931 a large plant in Bristol.'R I. closed, throwrng many men and women out oi work. I resigned my position with that company and attempted to organize a plant primarily to provide jobs ior these unemployed men and women. The plan was unsuccessiui. Dlsi" ion- ed. I moved from Bristol deter- mined to iorget sentiment and make money. Soon I was doing just that in another businm. Started By A Sermon One Sunday I listened to a ser- mon that brought me up with a start. The minister seemed to look right into my eyes as he pointed out the responsibility and obliga- tion that business men have to- ward workers and toward Ctod. "Any men who has the ability to organise and operate a business and thus provide employment must iuliill this obligation." the minister declared. "Ii such a man iails in this duty." he continued. “he will bump headlong into this ye have done it unto one oi the least oi these. my brethren, ye have done it unto Me." I left the church that morning with my thoughts in a turmoil. But the minister was not through with me. The following Sunday he again struck home with a devasta- ting thrust. The simiect oi his talk was: "nmanicipation irom Fear". scriptural passage: ‘Inasmuch as ' in a ringing voice he pronounced that man would never accomplish’ ate his thinking. "But." he said, “amen who will, take God as his partner will derive, more help from this than from any earthly partnership. One plus God is an army." "throw oii Fears" -I sat rooted in my pew. God was never more real than at that mo- ment. He was talking to me through this minister. He read the doubts in my mind. He was telling me to throw oi my tears and strike but under His partnership. My obligations to Him and to my isl- low men were outlined in tezms I could never explain away. Brother's Idea v The idea ior creating the De- partment oi Christian Relations came irom my brother! one nlzht while tossing in a Pullman berth he reviewed the many steps our plant had taken to improve work- ing and livin conditions oi em- ployees and t eir iamilies. In spite or all this, he could not help but el that business as a whole was selilsh institution. would it be possible to create a department that would be entirely unselfish in character. a depart- ment dsdicaisd to the service oi others, not ior the sale oi more merchandise nor ior publicity? He had in mind a department which would operate as did Jesus Ch'i=t xineteen hundred years ago when "He went about doing good". Amazing Publicity Our ilrsi; intention was to give absolutely no publicity to the de- partment. However. as soon as Mr. Dutton resigned his pastorate, the story broke and the resulting pub- llcity was amazing As we feared, many misunderstood our motives. We were congratulated on devel- oping a smart publicity stunt and denounced Rs nypocrites in the same breath. Fortulintely, many people believed in our sincerity and their letters have been heart-' warming. May I stress once more that this, additional business.
