On the contrary we think the fact that this solemn declar- ation has been so long retained in its pre-- sent form affords the strongest possible eviiience of that conservative disposition of the British mind to which our first brief paragraph made reference. The coronation oath dates back to the days of bitter and persecuti-ngantagonism between Catholic and Protestant. Pro- _ltestant ascendancy when it became fully established found expression in such forms as the Test Act and the declaration 1 which all Sovereigns have beeni obliged to make since the days of Queen Ann. The , ineligible to ollice under the crofmri who allegiance, or who did not iecei-ve the Sacrament according to the usage of the Church of England, or subscribe to the declaration against transubstantiation. The Test Act was primarily directed against Roman C'-atholics, but while less offensive to Protestant Disse.nters~,. or Xonconformists it placed them under' the same civil disabilil ies. The Test Act was repealed in 18‘2.S,_but the substance of the declaration before required to be taken by every crown otlicial was retained in the coronation ceremony. Hence when Queen Victoria; was crowned, ten years after the repeal ol the Test Act she was required in the presence of God,to solemnly and sincerely profess, testify and declare that she believed there was not in the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper any transubstantia~ tion of the elements of bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, and further, to use the words: “And that the invocation and adoration of the Virgin Mary or any other saint, and the sacrifice of the Mass as they are now used in- the church of Rome are superstitious and idolatrous." \Ye are of opinion _that a very large pro~ portion of Protcsmiits, none of whom believe in transulistiiiitiation, or masses, or the "worship" of saints, can readily believe that the words above quoted from the coronation oath are and must be of- fensive to Roman Catholics. l\'or can we ~ec that the retention of the objected _ words can possiliility serve any good pur- pose; and we think they ought to be elim- di-riounce the errois, or wha a trial will oopvinceyou that n_s ai cure for _ _ rw 1 _- '~~-»»~~----»_-_J _..._ _ _ _ To _¢f~f__ __ _ ._ __ __ _ __ __ ._ __ _ ` ` . _ _. ~_ _ _ "" ~»`*_ ‘ _ 'L -""§‘-2’-V‘”‘~'r-‘f*_‘* . _ _ .~,,_ »-_-¢_.
