Jan. 25 ---(AP) -- The Pope was reported today to on suffering from bronchial pneu- nonis. Vatican souncos, disclosing that the '16-year-old Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church is more wriousiy ill than at first indicated. iatd, however, he continues to thaw improvement and that there 33 no cause for concern. The Pope, visibly weary during the public consistory in St. Peter's Basilica on Jan. 15, when he placed the red hat on the head of new cardinals of the church, took to ma bed Thursday. The Vatican Press Office at first said he suffered from a slight attack of influenza. accompanied by moderate fever. Yesterday, the Vatican's L'Observatore Romano referred to the Pope's ailment for the first time, saying it was ac- romtpnnied by "irritation of the respiratory tract." Today Vatican sources said his ailment was bronchial pneumonia. The Pope has suflfered bronchial ;rritations frequentbl in the past. This was one of the reasons why in recent years he extended his stay at the Castel Garidolfo Pontifical summer residence am the shore of Lake Albano. Vatican sources also disclosed that the Pope's physician, Prof. Riccardo Galeazzi-Lisi, has been staying at the Vatican since Fri- tlsy to be more readily available if needed. Despite his ailment, the Pontiff continued today to attend to af- fairs of the church. He received his pro-secretaries of state, Mon- ugnnr: Giovanni Batilista Montinl and Domenico Tardinii. He also recited the Rosary today for the return to Italy of war prisoners reported still held in Russia. Pray- cm are betiig offered throughout Italy today for this intention. The Pope recited the Rosary in his Vat- ican apartment, surrounded by the few members of his intimate household. Jan. 26 - tCP) - The Exchequer Court has ruled that Quebec "education tax" pay- ments can not be deducted from federal income tax assessments. In a far-reaching judgment made public Saturday, it reversed a ruling of the Income Tax Appeal Board granting a Federal Rev- enue Department appeal against nine Quebec power companies. The companies had protested the clisallowance as a federal income tax deduction of a. total of some sl,400.000 paid in one year by the companies to the Quebec Govern- ment as "education tax" levies. But while the ,Exchequer Court dealt only with the protest of the power companies, its ruling will have wider implications in Que- bec. The cducation tax is levied not only against provincial power companies but also against pro- vincial telephone, timber and oil companies. All of these big corporations will be affected by the court ruling, which in effect agrees with the Federal Government that such ed- Br Sidney Welland LIVERPOOL, England, Jan. 5- -Mondayl -- tReutersi-The blas- lng luxury liner Empress of Can- ada lay on her side in her berth tonight-ii. wreck after fire ate through her Vitals for eight hours.
