Prof. Baxter, professor of cloeution at Harvard College, was drowned at Cape May, N. J., recently, while swimming beyond his depth. The Paris Fiquro gives the name of the prominent public man lately in- volved in a scandal for cheating at play. It is M. Balthazar Jacotin, Senator of the Haute-Loire and Judge of the Court of Justice at Puy. Mrs. Miller, who succored and befriended hundreds of Union prisoners, in Libby Prison, has been ejected from her home in Mulberry street, New York, and all her household goods are on the sidewalk. She is old and unable, by feebleness, to earn her support. Mile. Juliette Dodu is about to receive the decoration of the Legion of Honour. Tn 1870 she was at the head of the telegraph oflice at Pithiviers, (Loiret), and at the ap- proach of the Prussians she concealed her instrument. Assoon as they had taken possession of the place, she attached the dial to the wire, intercepted their messages, which were sent to the Sub-Perfect, and by that means the safety of a body of French troops, which was in great danger, was se- cured, Lord Dutferin’s receipt from England of Her Majesty's contribution of the means for the construction of Kent Gate, has sug- gested to the minds of some of the citizens of Quebec the appropriate idea of distin- guishing one of the other city gates by naming it ‘‘Dufferin Gate,” in compliment to His Excellency.
