This is = also shown in Ontario and in Prince Edward Island. All the oth- er provinces show a corresponding decrease both in the number oi‘ diphtheria cases and deaths. This decrease in cases and deaths ls due to one cause and one cause only- namely Toxoid protection. During the four year period (1929-82) Canada had an average death rate of 554 and Prince Ed- ward Island oi 8. Contrast this with the iour year period (1921- 24) and we rind Canada had an average death rate of 1633 and Prince Edward Island with an av- erage death rate of 10- The only factor that could possibly change these rates was the immunizing campaign waged during the later period against diphtheria by pro- tecting the school and pre-school children by Toxoid. Similar results could be shown in every province and in every state that has been active in protecting its children. Surely these results are worth while and althouizh we can report progress yet the campaign must ever go forward. Many parents throughout the province have had their children protected, yet there are still a large number who have not availed themselves of this protection and it is to these parents that we appeal. The younger the child the more it needs the protection. All children from six months and upwards re- quire it. Sixty per cent. of all deaths irom diphtheria occur before the age of five years and eighty per cent. under ten years. For this reason it is of the utmost import- ance to protect the young child- the babies in your homes. Protection is aflorded by three doses of Toxcid given at three weeks intervals and the protection is lasting and effective. In the near future a diphtheria immunlzlne clinic. notice oi’ which will appear in the press. will be conducted in Charlottetown, espec- ially for pro-school children but any school children not alreadv protected against diphtheria may avail themselves of this protection Parents are urged to take ad- vantage of the service and make ever-v effort to brine their children to the clinic. ‘Bear in mind the old BCWIP—"PREVT*TN'T'ION IS BET- TER THAN CUR ." 1 _.
